So I spent the afternoon at the ER
My youngest daughter fell while running through the kitchen, hitting her elbow on a drawer on the way down. She screamed bloody murder and it started swelling right away. Momma's instincts told me to get it checked out ASAP. I was right. She fractured her humerus right above the elbow.

Poor thing is in a hard cast from her upper arm down for the next month. :( At least it's purple.

*sigh*

The WORST thing in the world is seeing your child in pain and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Though I've been lucky; three kids and this is the first trip to the ER with one of them.

1. Awww. Good job parenting.
At least you weren't my parents, when I woke up from a skateboarding accident blind.

I got better.

sorry

that is hard

SPK jr had one trip to the ER in Estes Park of all places

he was pulling on my arm and i had a hold of his so he wouldn't fall and he kept pulling and pulling and then he started crying...

and he cried for 30 min solid and wouldn't let you touch his arm.

the ER doc manipulated it and it went back into where it was supposed to be (elbow apparently) and he was fine then

my god i felt so terrible that day

it's heartbreaking when a child is hurting period

3. Best thing for a kid in pain is a Momma who's got the instincts!!!
My son had a fibral seizure when he was 18 months old and it was really tough emotionally. make sure you take good care of yourself too over the next few days.

5. Awwwww. I'm so sorry!
At least it was only a fracture and not a full break.

How old is your youngest?

11. Oh my that must have been very scary. I'm so glad you had the foresight to sweep her up...
and take her to the ER.

Those are those motherly instincts kicking in, no doubt.

9. Awww-poor thing
I was lucky with mine. I had a girl live with us for a few years and she was a wreck. Once he had a cast on her leg and fell sown some stairs at school... where she broke both her wrists.

Yes its hard to see em in such pain. I hope she recovers quickly.

10. that is definitely the worst feeling ever
My youngest broke her arm 3 times within an 18 month period when she was 5-6. Watching them set it was the hardest thing I've ever experienced. I hope your baby heals up quickly. Yay for mommy instinct.

13. I can only imagine.
I don't have children of my own, but I know what I feel when I see my neice or my little sister hurt. I can only imagine that a parent would feel that a helluva lot more strongly.

14. This reminds me of the time my 2 year old sliced his hand open on a broken baby food jar.
It happened in less than a second quite literally. We were leaving to pick up his brother and mom at a judo class they were taking and my son picked up a baby food jar that his brother kept insects in and fell. I heard the glass breaking and then I saw blood everywhere.

It was, I think, the scariest moment of my life - and I'm speaking as a guy who was near death from a bicycle accident. I got the doctor on the cell phone and he said he'd meet me at the hospital. He told me he knew a great neurosurgeon if any nerves were cut.

Just what I wanted to hear.

I was a gutless wonder, I must say. I weaseled my way into staying in the waiting room with my oldest boy - who was about six then - while Mom stayed with the little guy for the stitches.

The nerves were fine, thank goodness.

My older boy had more than 30 surgeries before he was 5, but they were all planned and controlled and somehow it didn't seem quite as bad.

I shiver just thinking about it.

15. 3 kids and this the first trip to the ER -
that may be some kind of record, eligible for inclusion in Guiness' Book of Records. :-) I spent 2 days in December at the ER with my husband - his annual fall trip to the ER. And it counted because both were before Winter Solstice. I hope your daughter heals quickly and there are no more ER trips for you for several more years. But still, a purple cast - how cool is that? We only had white when I was a kid - although I never actually had to wear a cast.
