1. My friend watched
He said Miss Virginia should have won. I wanted Miss NC to win, because of NC of course, but also she was Lumbee Indian like my husband. But she was like 5th or something in the end, my friend told me the result. He said the winner had an awful dress for the evening gown part.

6. helping to skew the votes.

Seriously, she has a friend who did pageants in TX and she wants TM to do them with her. :eyes:

We'll see how it turns out. If there is serious 'scholarship' money, that is one thing because I'm not investing another penny in that kid. She's way over budget as it is.

4. Yay for Michigan!
Nice to have some positive press for a change even if it from a beauty pageant.

19. It's also a clever indictment of the organizations that put them on
I was in the Jaycees for 10 years and worked on two Junior Miss pageants, and let me tell you — it's every bit as silly as portrayed in "Smile." Either director Michael Ritchie or writer Jerry Belson must've been in the organization, because they freakin' nailed it, right down to the "exhausted rooster" ceremony.

In the second of the two pageants I worked on, at one point the chairperson was outside a mall, literally asking girls passing by, "Hey, y'wanna be in the Junior Miss pageant?"

It was... embarrassing.

9. Looks like staid old Miss America has taken a cue
from Trump's Miss USA t and a fest. Looks like they dumped not only Atlantic City but the pretense that the contestants are really vying for college scholarships.

10. .

by Kirsten Anerberg

"Women's Body Esteem is big business. Billions of dollars are spent on the "weight loss industry" yearly. That industry is solely dependent on women's self-hatred. Women are reduced to size, told to be less, told to shed big chunks of themselves for acceptance. Likewise, the "beauty industry" has convinced millions of women that chemical crap on their faces, and plucked eyebrows that are drawn back on, is "beauty." ... May I suggest the very radical political action of robbing these industries of your body hatred dollars?

I first became aware of the women's body esteem movement in 1983, in Santa Cruz, California. Ann Simonton (www.mediawatch.com), a former cover model for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, Cosmo, Covergirl, etc., turned her attentions to body activism shortly after a revelation in a dressing room with other models. She was getting ready for a photo shoot with other famous models and they were all complaining about different parts of their bodies. Their necks, their thighs, their stomachs, their eyes...And it hit Ann that these models were the pinnacle of beauty that society was holding up as every woman's ideal, yet it still was not good enough. Their photos from the shoot would be airbrushed. Ann realized the modeling industry was promoting an unattainable standard of beauty for women."

...

17. I was about to say something similar
When a mainstream "beauty pageant" features women 5' 4" and 155 pounds with 42-inch hips, I'll support it.

But I'd rather these things just go away altogether.

12. Awesome venue for the event
"...Miss America Pageant at the Planet Hollywood hotel and casino in Las Vegas"

That may be the most apropos thing I've ever read.

She's cute, no doubt; literally oozing with apple pie and well-wishes for "the troops."

I didn't know it was on, but saw it on the news. I guess her grandmother was also Miss America.

Her "platform" is eating disorders. I just read a book that said that this is so rampant in sororities that plumbers are constantly being called to clear the vomit out of the pipes.

14. Where is it, Miss America's center of gravity?
That first swimsuit shot of her looks like she's teetering over to one side, like in the "Smooth Criminal" video. Do Michigan residents really lean that far to the right?

from the pics you have just shown, Miss Virginia looks purr-fecto. I vote for Miss Virginia. What do you mean it's too late? Fixed! I object! This contest was fixed! Do over! Annul the whole contest. Do over, I say! I demand a do over! What a shapely body. They weren,t toned like that in my day. Just as pretty, but not nearly as toned. Wow!

If these contests had any intellectual integrity, the winner would be sacrified to appease the volcano gods.
