I'm attempting to make my own sushi.
I'm preparing the rice right now...I bought the Nori..but it turns out I got the sheets for hand rolls. Any advice? Suggestions? If this works out...boy oh boy, let me tell you what...I may never leave the house again.

1. I've seen only one kind of sheets of nori
To roll sushi (as when making tekka maki--tuna rolls-- or kappa maki--cucumber rolls), you lay out the rice and filling on a sheet of nori and roll them up using a flexible mat. Then you slice them up.

The other kind of hand-rolled sushi has you making what looks like an ice cream cone out of the nori.

The lumpy kinds of sushi (nigiri-zushi) use nori only as decoration in some varieties. To get the little nori "ribbons" that are wrapped around some of these varieties or used in chirashizushi, just cut up some slices of nori with a very sharp knife or scissors.

(The inscription on the photo says "Fancy sushi that you can make in your own home.")

5. That's the kind of nori sheets I got..for hand rolls...
I made tamago (sweet egg roll) nigiri
and avocado/carrot/cucumber hand rolls
also some green onion/avocado hand rolls

and some spicy "tuna"(no tuna in it) rolls...just the spicy sauce, rice, green onion and avocado (I'm a veg).

My rice came out SUPERB. I'm having a hard time not eating it out of the bowl.

2. In our household, that's CMW's job. And it's an _all day_ job.

4. Some of my favorite sushi is hand rolls.
Spider rolls....yum, yum. Or spicy tuna....or hell's bells, any of them.

6. My sympathies ...
The worst part for me was always to get the rice evenly spread out on the sheets without it sticking all over to my fingers. Hint: Keep your fingers always wet! (See Heidi's post with link upthread.)

I can only tell you that you've taken on an extremely labor intensive project. I was very glad to learn that a new Sushi place has opened just across the lake from us. ;)

7. Actually it went really well...

I'm a veg,so I didn't have to mess with the fish...and I'm also pretty much an underacheiver, so it didn't have to look pretty. The handrolls made it pretty easy...you just slap the stuff on there, roll it up and start shoving it in your mouth! I'll admit though...not much made it to the plate..I was eating it as fast as I was making it...and I kept my fingers wet by licking them! LOL!
