amazing photo essay
a family farm turned into a subdivision. photojournalist scott strazzante spent years documenting life at harlow and jean cagwin's farm. the house, on which 75-year-old harlow and his siblings had grown up, was torn down on july 2, 2002 to make room for a subdivision

Visiting her childhood bedroom for the final time, Sandy Cagwin spends an emotional moment alone minutes before the farmhouse was torn down.

more here

strazzante later returned to the subdivision for a look at how it's changed

slide show from the chicago tribune here

this month's national geographic also has a photo journal. i can't find it online, but it's definitely worth checking out

4. Joni Mitchell wrote a song about this....
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 09:08 PM by BrklynLiberal
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see em
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that d.d.t. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Dont it always seem to go
That you dont know what youve got
Till its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

8. and yet
i hardly think a cattle farm is paradise or that anyone posting in this thread would be willing to spend their one and only life working on a small family cattle farm, sounds like a pretty definition of hell to me

and all they love, who are you to, as always, to shit all over everything

10. i think there are plenty of people who enjoy that sort of life.
not that you'd be willing to comprehend that.
