11. Not exactly...
Starved Rock State Park derives its name from a Native American legend of injustice and retribution. In the 1760s, Pontiac, chief of the Ottawa tribe upriver from here, was slain by an Illiniwek while attending a tribal council in southern Illinois. According to the legend, during one of the battles that subsequently occurred to avenge his killing, a band of Illiniwek, under attack by a band of Potawatomi (allies of the Ottawa), sought refuge atop a 125-foot sandstone butte. The Ottawa and Potawatomi surrounded the bluff and held their ground until the hapless Illiniwek died of starvation- giving rise to the name “Starved Rock.”

23. Yeah, nasty history, but beautiful scenery.
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 05:59 PM by mycritters2

This is the rock itself (the flag pole is on the peak) from across the Illinois River.

this is Starved Rock from another rock a bit down the river.

This is looking at the river from the top of Starved Rock.

I live about 10 miles from Starved Rock.

25. The Vulcan statue is the largest cast iron statue in the world
and the symbol of Birmingham, Alabama. The 56 foot (17 m) tall statue depicts the Roman god Vulcan, god of the fire and forge. It was created as Birmingham's entry at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.

It's been 'remodeled' since the post card photo.
I lived nearby and used to play there as a kid.

27. I know where most of those scenes are. Let's see..
the P depicts the old Union Station on St. John St.
the O is Congress Square looking at the Hays block
the T is Longfellow Square
the N looks like the old Portland City Hospital (now the Barron Center) or Maine General (the old name for Maine Med)
the R and L could be any of the parks, but the A and D could depict only one place and it's a known favorite of littlegreen.

The cabin on the river, well you've got me there.
;)

32. Wow!
Heck, I doubt I would have remembered it's called Hays block!

littlegreen does love the pond.
A little to much sometimes. (likes to be IN the pond when it's all water).

Right now I can look out my window and count at least 3 skaters on the pond.
Today the Mrs took him out on the pond on an old wooden sled and he LOVED it!

:D
