Max "Jethro Bodine" Baer Jr.'s Girlfriend Commits Suicide

The 30-year-old girlfriend of 70-year-old Max Baer, Jethro Clampett of "The Beverly Hillbillies," died Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Lake Tahoe, Calif.

According to a sheriff's spokesman, Baer called 9-1-1 at 1:15 PM last Thursday after discovering Rhodes unconscious in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound. She apparently regained consciousness and told deputies she was trying to kill herself. A handwritten suicide note found at the scene confirmed that, cops said.

She was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno where she was placed on life-support. Her condition did not improve and she died Sunday after her family requested she be taken off life-support.

No foul play is suspected.

1. How horrible.
Max Baer always seemed to be such a good sport about his limited niche of a Hollywood career, rather than bitter, as some type-cast stars turn out to be. I just automatically associated him with the happy all the time character he played and assumed his social life was a like an extended re-run of his show.

It's kind of sad to be reminded that depression can lurk in even the most successful of homes.

4. Very sad.
I've been enjoying the reruns of the Beverly Hillbillies. I'm reminded of what a very funny show it was.
Hard to believe those shows started in the early '60s. Time flies.

5. For me, Baer's "Jethro" character was like one of the Beatles.
I assume there are some kind of protracted legal issues that have kept the series from appearing on anything other than low-quality DVDs. I clearly remember when CBS decided to "upgrade" their programming by kicking shows like Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres to the curb. Max has had a love-hate relationship with the character over the years, but I think he'd be shocked to learn how many people see him as a legend.

13. He's an ornery sort.
I remembered an interesting article, and found it online. This article, which appeared in the Los angeles Times magazine, gives a vivid look into the life of this complex person. Read how cavalier Ron Howard was with the history of Baer's famous father. Keep in mind that Ron Howard slandered a man for money.

14. Very sad, indeed
and also sad that the picture there is of him, not her - and that his prior dating history is also included. :wtf:
