L O S T
I guess I'll start the thread.

Perhaps spoiler so DON'T READ.

We chose to watch LOST and I will watch the debate in two hours, when CNN will rerun it.

I think that it was Hurley's funeral from last season since the events on this episode obviously took place earlier. On the other hand, he did say The Oceanic Six.

1. I disagree (spoilers included)
People liked Hurley and there would have been friends and family at his funeral. Plus I don't think Kate would have responded negatively to the idea of going to his funeral.

I think it was Ben in the casket.

Tonight was a great episode. I want to know what Hurley meant in the gym. I also want to know why he was able to see Jacob right away when Locke couldn't.

Or it may be someone we all love and adore right now.

Great show tonight. God I love the writers.

He killed Anna Lucia and Libby, gave up Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer to the others. He wouldn't get a huge turnout.

53. Naomi lied
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 03:33 PM by lost-in-nj
to the men on the ship for one of what I think
could be 2 reasons

first
She believed Kate and knew all of them were not out to kill her

or second
Naomi knows the ship people are bad and have come to get the losties
so she had to prove to Kate she believed her and lied so the ship people would come

lost

don't know why Hurley is sorry for going with locke yet

and he found the cabin because he slowed down thinking of Charlie
and got disoriented and got separated from the group....

5. Just finished watching.. more confused then ever..
We watched the debate and DVR'd LOST, so we just finished watching it. God my head hurts. OK.. so the scenes with Hurley in the car, psycho ward, etc... were obviously before Jack goes nuts, because he throws out the line about "Maybe i'll grow a beard", and last season he had a beard. So this is a prequel to that.

But, who are the 6 off the island? Jack, Kate, Hurley.. who are the other 3? Why only 6? WTF?

Ehh.. i'll just watch the whole season, and still not know. Ohh.. and whats up with people appearing to Hurley.. is he really nuts? Sheesh!!!

7. I don't know!!
I'm confused how Jack & Hurley went to different areas of the island (Jack & Kate go to the beach, Hurley goes with Locke) and yet the both end up off the island. Do they rescue certain people from different parts of the Island? How does that work.

I have no idea who Kate is living with.. but you'd think perhaps Sawyer.. you know he has to still be in the story.

10. I heard a bit on NPR today...
...they said that they are planning 3 more seasons -- no more. This way the writers don't have to maintain open-ended story lines, and they can bring the series to a satisfying conclusion. Now, if we can only end the WGA strike...

13. They decided that last year
3 years of 16 episode seasons to bring the story to a close. Since they only got to film 8 so far, they may have to make one of the other two longer, or both. But at least we know these 8 episodes are actually building to a conclusion. I kind of feel bad for the actor who plays Hurley. What if he wanted to lose weight? He can't.

47. Doesn't seem logical that Kate would be living with anyone other than Jack or Sawyer
And it obviously isn't Jack. Since Jack visited Hurley in the nuthouse and we can assume they left the island at the same time, yet we also know that Hurley and Sawyer went with Locke, then it only makes sense that the split into two camps won't be a permanent one, or at least there will be some people going from Locke's group back to Jack's.

As for the stiff in the coffin, I'm thinking it's Locke. I doubt Ben would ever leave the island alive.

14. We now know of two points that we had already passed in last year's season ender
We know thatJack becomes a suicidal drunk but we don't know how WE get to there from the point of Hurley being in the hospital

We know now that only 6 leave the island but it seems that the rest either stay back at the island or they all die. Hurley asks about "telling" and Jack and Hurley talk about going back BUT Jack tells Kate that he wants to go back.

17. in the casket?
I think the funeral at the end of last season was for Michael. This took place in an African-American neighborhood. We know the deceased was from New York as was Michael. And we know that neither Kate nor Jack was fond of the person in the casket. That would be the case for Michael who shot AL and Libby and took the group to be captured by the Others.
My working theory on who Kate had to get back to is Aaron (Claire's baby), but I need to rewatch exactly what Kate said about going back to "him".
Only 7 episodes left this season to find out. Oh well.

29. but why wouldn't Michael's son and other family come to the funeral?
It has to be someone who has absolutely no friends or family. It would also be someone not considered part of the "Oceanic Six" because their celebrity status would mean someone would be at the funeral I think. If it isn't Ben, maybe it's one of the other "others". Hell, maybe it's Jacob. Either way, it looks like Jack was right. Live together or die alone.

This season got off to the right start. I hope all the episodes are as good this one was.

Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 10:58 AM by Rob H.
with their "rescuers," namely that if they go, everyone else stays on the island but gets to live rather than being killed. Remember that Ben said whoever was coming was going to kill everyone, and in Hurley's vision of Charlie, Charlie tells him, "They need you," and they cut to Hurley hugging Claire and Aaron on the island. (Charlie also had "THEY NEED YOU" written on his hand when he swam up to the mirror in the police station.)

If everyone else were dead, why would they have to go back?

Edited to add: There's a two-minute teaser clip on ABC's website of Locke's group finding one of their "rescuers" next week, if anyone's interested.

54. I was reading about that character, Matthew Abbadon
on some LOST fan sites and his name is an anagram for "What bad boat men?" and his last name has religious connotations, too. Per the Wikipedia entry for Abbadon:

Abaddon (Hebrew אבדון Avaddon, meaning "destruction"). In Biblical poetry (Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11), it comes to mean "place of destruction", or the realm of the dead, and is associated with Sheol. Abaddon is also one of the compartments of Gehenna. By extension, it can mean an underworld abode of lost souls, or hell.

In Revelation 9:11, it is personified as Abaddon, "Angel of the Abyss", rendered in Greek as Apollyon; and he is described as king of the locusts which rose at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. In like manner, in Rev. vi. 8, Hades is personified following after death to conquer the fourth part of the earth.

Abaddon is one of the infernal names used in LaVeyan Satanism, and is first in the list—only as it comes first alphabetically—and means "the destroyer."

I have no spoiler intel here, but for some reason I think the person she is with is either Ben or someone else with the power to keep her identity safe from authorities. Plus, wasn't she driving an expensive car when she met Jack? I don't think Sawyer would have money.

Also, something about the way she said, "He'll wonder where I am" I don't see Sawyer being that controlling.

Arrested and stands trial. But, gets off because of her Mom, Jack, and "him."

And probably some pull from Hanso, Widmore, et al.

34. For some reason, Hurley is sorry for going with Locke
Even though both Jack and Hurley get off the island after they're in different groups, even though both eventually end up feeling they need to go back to the island and never should have left, even though Locke is the one who said they shouldn't leave the island.

Yeah, it's a good show.

And the way that guy at the institution looked at Hurley after he asked Hurley if they were still alive...that look alone made the show worth it.

42. I think for Hurley to make that statement to Jack so quickly after
he visits him means they will probably be getting off the island fairly soon.

Great having the show back on though. I really enjoy it. I like every episode much better after I watch it the second time. I miss a lot the first time I watch them.

66. Really? I think exactly the opposite
that there will be more twists and events and crossing of paths between the two groups. Remember, there are six of them who left. So in addition to Jack and Kate from one group, there should be three more from Locke group.

73. Don't know; why did the other "crazy" guy at the inst. warn Hurley:
"I'd watch out if I were you. There's a guy over there. He's staring at you."

Unless there is someone behind Charlie's ghost who happens to be staring at Hurley; that guy sees Charlie.

83. That's a pretty common theme in literature, especially in the 19th century
Kids and dogs and crazy people are more "in tune" with the supernatural in stories back then, and even today.

Of course, I adhere to the theory that the Island is purgatory and they're all dead, and the Island is how they determine whether they go to heaven or hell. The post-modernist spin on it is that the good guys (Ben, etc.) act bad, while the bad guys (rescuers) seem good.

77. A way to say goodbye?
Charlie was for me and so many others my favorite character -- someone I could identify with. Okay, maybe not the heroin, but he semed like a real guy. Not a famous doctor or the world's greatest conman or a super-criminal, and not breathtakingly beautiful, either (Jack, Kate, Sawyer). I feel the same way about Hurley, and I was pissed when they killed Charlie.

So when Charlie died last season (I assumed because he was offered more movie roles, like LotR or Master and Commander), it hit me hard. His reappearance allows some resolution. Either that, or it's another mindfuck -- which would be even sweeter.

We all saw Charlie drown, so it's logical to assume he's dead. But a ghost can't punch you in the face, when you ask him to prove that he's real.

107. A random idea (warning: reeeeaalllyyy out-there idea)
Hurley, who is quite buddha-like (referring to his mood, not his size) seems to live a bit outside physical reality and more in the quantum universe. Like the Native American shamans who have one foot in this reality and one foot in the Otherworld of infinite possibility--witness his incredible luck, even when playing basketball, and his ability to see Jacob and the shack on the island. If that's the case, and can experience other potential realities that exist alongside the "one" reality we're observing, then the reality in which Charlie is not dead is just as real and concrete to him as the reality where Charlie died.

Ouch. Quantum physics makes my brain hurt.

113. I just am not sure. It seems
the O-6 have attained some sort of fame/status. This leads me to believe that only 6 made it back. Desmond "saw" Claire and Aron get on the copter, but that is no guarantee they made it. I just do not know what to think of Michael and Walt, but I think Walt, like Locke, is too connected to the island to leave it.

It is ALL about the Island. g.
