Is anyone else tired of TV shows that have background songs
all the time during supposedly tender scenes?

1. Cut-and-paste mis-use of music is offensive to me as well.

4. It's the biggies too like the hospital shows and Des. Housewives
and one or two others. Emotional scene come sup, soundtrack begins. Aggh! And it's so effing predictable. I think this started with Allie McBeal but I'm not sure. This is probably why I mainly watch old war movies or DVD colections of shows like Jeeves and Wooster.

6. J-J-J-Juicy!
I don't even watch Desperate Housewives, and that song still gets stuck in my head.

10. If I like the song, I'll look for it on iTunes. If they have it, I'll download it.
I agree the trend has gotten way out of hand, but done well, it accentuates the drama, and can introduce you to some really good music.

One of my favorite "discoveries" is "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star. Very atmospheric. They used it for a scene in 'Cold Case'.

It's like anything else; Done well or done poorly. That's all.

12. I think it's distracting and unlike the old "cue the violins"
tends to call attention to itself more and also is more obviously a contrivance to tug at the old heartstrings, don't you see?

14. Repetition has a lot to do with it.
When I first heard "Hallelujah" after a Secret Service agent was shot to death on "The West Wing", it was moving and breathtaking.

After hearing it for the umpteenth time on Scrubs, ER, Cold Case, and more, it just got tiresome.

Doesn't change the initial thrill, though...

15. hold on....
"Hallelujah", as in Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"? Used in TV shows? That actually makes me feel a little ill to think about that..... one of the greatest songs of the 20th century as far as I'm concerned. What a shame.

13. Yes, and I also hate it when the background music is
too loud to be able to hear the quieter parts of the dialogue. That really gets on my nerves.

17. I've noticed that too. I expect some cast member to holler demurely
over his or her shoulder, "Shut it the fuck up!!"

21. The dialogue is usually so lame anyway that maybe that's why
they're doing it. Still in not pleasant.

the use of pop songs on TV shows has rendered most television programming unwatchable for me.
