6. Here's a good working definition:
Asshat is a slightly trendier and less severe variation of asshole, graphically describing someone who has his “head up his own ass” (i.e., not knowing what’s going on), or a variation of “butthead”. In the former sense, it is suggested that one is wearing one’s ass for a hat. A more modern usage of asshat describes a person doing something stupid, and can apply to anyone: “The boss is up to asshattery because he broke the computer even though he knew he was doing the wrong thing.” This meaning was popularized by Something Awful character Jeff K.

7. Now I completely get it.
I understand what an asshat is, and why they are so common in GDP.

Thanks for clarifying!

11. As I understand it, it was first used in the movie Office Space.
One of the character was raving about the sheer dumb nastiness of his bosses. Someone (writer(s) or director) decided that asshole really didn't describe them, so asshat was used instead. Asshat is an asshole without the charm.

If you've never seen Office Space and have ever been a cube rat, it will speak to you. It's also funny as hell.

12. 'That '70s Show' might've beaten it
"Office Space" was released in February, 1999. In the first season of "That '70s Show," which began 23 August 1998, Red Forman was heard to threaten Eric with "...unless you want to wear your ass for a hat."

Later, there was this exchange, as Eric was stacking boxes:

Red: "Hey, bend at the knees or else I'll..."
Eric: "Kick my ass, put your foot in my ass, make my ass a hat, yeah, yeah, yeah."
Red: "Geez, and I didn't think you were listening."

13. Nope.
Michael Bolton (the singer) is described by Michael Bolton (the programmer) as a "no-talent assclown." But "asshat" is never said in that film.

18. The word "asshat" isn't used in BASEketball, but
Matt Stone's character Remer tells one of his teammates "I'm going to shove your head so far up your ass you'll have to wear yourself as a hat!" or something to that effect.

17. I am convinced it came from PvP genre online games
It used to be a big funny thing to kill someone, take all their loot, and sit on their dead corpse's head and laugh or emote craziness. The sitting on their head part was referred to as "I gave Gwar an asshat and look at the phat lewts I got off him."

Carebears ruined that time in history. :x

That is my guess anyhow. :P

:hi:
