8. absolutely, i didn't like the remake at all. In the original the brainwashing scenes
imo were brilliant.

9. It's a brilliant film.
Absolutely brilliant. The scene near the end, when Raymond's mother (Angela Lansbury) tells Raymond (a equally wonderfully cast Laurance Harvey) "we'll be swept into the White House with powers that will make martial law seem like anarchy"...just plain out and out chilling.

Just near perfect...the casting (besides Harvey and Lansbury, also Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh), a great screenplay by George Axelrod, and great direction by John Frankenheimer.

"The Manchurian Candidate"...the orignal (I have zero interest in seeing the recent remake...why mess with perfection?) is one of my favorite movies.

Interesting fact about the original...in real life, Laurance Harvey...who played Raymond Shaw...was a few years older than Angela Lansbury, who played his mother. :-)

Enjoy!

14. It was shown on TV ONCE in the mid 1960s, which was when I first saw it
I was only in my early teens, but it stuck with me.

It was then withdrawn from circulation, and I didn't see it again till 1988, when I was taking a summer program at the University of Michigan. It was the heyday of "Murder She Wrote," and the theater was full of college students, who obviously had never seen the original.

When Angela Lansbury first appeared, all the students started whispering. "That's Angela Lansbury!"

Those who know her only as the refined, genteel Jessica Fletcher in "Murder She Wrote" might be surprised to know that she made her U.S. debut at the age of 17 as the treacherous housemaid in "Gaslight."
