1. It's a HORRIBLE movie
...but ya know, I still love it. I don't know why, I just DO.

3. I get liking it because it's horrible
I love horrible movies. Plan 9 is one of my faves. What I don't get is why I looked up reviews today, and respectable reviewers (The NY Times!) gave it high marks! WTF!

5. I NEVER read reviews.
As far as I'm concerned ALL reviewers have their heads up a warm dark place.

That movie stank on ice.

6. Thanks. I really wanted to like that movie....
Remember, 1979. Star Wars was barely two years old, and I thought, If anyone can do bitchin' SFX for a black hole, those mofos at Disney could!

Then the movie started. I felt like an audience member in 'Springtime for Hitler' sitting there with my jaw agape at the awfulness.

8. Believe me, I understand.
I was 16, and a Star Wars fanboy exponentially. I was PSYCHED.

Then the soundtrack started, and it was singularly the whiniest crap I've ever heard come out of speakers.

Then it got worse. Roddy McDowell as a cutesy robot worse. Followed by Slim Pickens as another cutesy robot worse.

10. Didn't the concept of heaven and hell existing at the end of a black hole send anyone else
into a fit of...well...many large reactions at once?

13. It's a shame it didn't have that effect on the director.

11. Ed Wood would have peed his pants.
But then he would have made his own version using stock footage.

14. "The soundtrack sounded like a tornado warning"?
The Black Hole sucks hard enough to take the paint off of a battleship, but John Barry's score kicks ass: bold and moody, yet graceful. Between it and the lush score for the equally shitty Moonraker, Barry was on quite a hot streak in the late '70s. Don't take my word for it; judge for yourself:

16. You have got to be kidding me
The main theme (not the overture) was a series of 5 or 6 rising notes, repeated over and over again. In that first link, go to about 2:40 and listen. It has a whiny background, with an overblown theme. I'd rather have my eardrums lanced.

15. When I saw it in the theater when I was ten, I thought it was pretty cool
I haven't seen it since then, so I'll reserve judgement.

19. I thought it was great, and I remember seeing it a bunch of times...
...but then, I also saw Xanadu about 12 times as well, so perhaps I wouldn't be a good judge of movies back then.

20. The movie reeked, but...
...I loved the gothic spaceship Cygnus. Like a big glass cathedral hanging on the edge of space, full of mystery and menace.

The rest of the film was the usual forgettable Disney blend of cutesy crap, schmaltz and sophomoric plot twists.
