First Nipples ever shown on American television? 1973???? Yup.

Valerie Perrine became the first woman to display (on purpose) her nipples on American network television during the May 4, 1973 broadcast of Bruce Jay Friedman's play "Steambath" shown on Hollywood Television Theater (PBS). The story offered an unusual portrayal of the afterlife with God presented as a Puerto Rican steambath attendant. Bill Bixby played a man who refused to admit that he had died. Valerie Perrine was seen taking a shower from all sides. Only a few PBS stations were adventurous enough to carry the program.

I'm not obsessed with this sort of thing but was watching a HD broadcast of Superman and was wondering what happened to Valerie as I had a crush on her ever since she played Montana in Slaughterhouse Five.

33. Boy, do I remember THAT one...

It must have been rebroadcast in Boston later that year, as I was in boarding school with no access to a TV on 5/4/73, but I sure do remember when I saw it. Not that I was unused to seeing bare breasts in motion pictures by then (age 16 or 17, depending on the rebroadcast date), but I never expected to see them on television. I kept thinking, "was that legal?"

Legal or not, they were mighty impressive...
