I'm really enjoying Tom Petty here..
One of the best half time shows I've seen. Hell, he isn't even lip-syncing.

2. I was just thinking the same thing.
He's actually a pleasure to watch. It looks like he's having fun. He's not drunk, he doesn't suck, can sing live and the band's into it. It's been really good.

4. Agreed! Definitely in my top two of all time (Prince being the only rival).
EXCELLENT!

I love it when they have talented people for halftime (as opposed to say . . . wardrobe malfunctions).

5. I'm feeling the same thing - I love Petty, but I also love that they just let him perform.
No spectacle, no bullshit, no fireworks while flags wave and simulated rape of terrorist child girls takes place.

This is what half-time shows should be - bring in a legitimate musician/artist (like Prince last year), and let them perform without making them do any bullshit.

6. We were just saying that it was nice to see....
a half-time show where the band just comes out and plays their music. No spandex, not flag wavers, no fireworks... On the other hand, boy does seeing Tom Petty make my age sink in. *sigh* I could have given birth to someone playing with the Patriots or Giants today. Oy!

Always thought that Campbell's outro solo on Running Down a Dream was overlooked in the "classic" rock canon. Pretty note for note just now--not my fave approach--but good to hear. Great sound too...

I think he actually performed live instead of lip-sync crap.

14. How about Neil Young next year?
Nah, he's way too "controversial" for them. Petty didn't even do his "Get to the point, Roll another joint" tune, although I really didn't expect him to. Or maybe they could have the North Mississippi All Stars. World Boogie. And maybe the young people would quit griping about halftime entertainment.

19. See, I'm having a problem understanding why people liked Prince
so damn much. The man is a talented musician, but c'mon, Petty, McCartney, the Glimmer twins (Jagger and Richards for those who may not know) have all earned their place in Rock and Roll history. Besides, The Stones can still kick some ass, even though they are fossils.

20. hmm, I think Prince represents a newer generation of rockers
he's wild, he's fun, he can play guitar exceedingly well, he writes great songs, and he played everything on his first record.

Oh, and he's a great rock/funk dance king.

(disclaimer - I'm an old school punk, but I love Prince) Oh, and he always used to have female musicians on stage, not just as eye-candy.

I can't count out genuine talent just because it came after all the legends. (Also Prince was my first true love  I cried my eyes out at last year's half-time, he just sounded so good!)

26. Tom definitely still has it. Much better than last year.
I'm a big fan of his. Low key but always cool.

Much better than last year. I know there are some Prince fans on board here, but seriously? Prince? Ugh. I wasn't aware that people not desperately clinging to the 80s still actually cared about Prince. You had McCartney and The Stones the two years prior, and the following year they gave us a purple midget.

I still liked Paul McCartney doing "Hey Jude" back at the 2005 Super Bowl in Jacksonville. But that's just me.

28. I hate to be a killjoy, but I thought Petty sucked.
And I'm a TP fan. He looked nearly dead. Played with no energy. The sound was lousy.

They coulda done a lot better than pick a dinosaur.

I have seen TP about 20 or more times and I gotta say...

Is anyone gonna get tired of the same five fucking songs? Nothing newer that the early eighties? And then take all the jams out of them to time constraints?

Prince kicked fucking ass last year, was dirtier than every halftime show ever. the shadow bit he did was incredible.
