Charles Branson's daughter is viciously raped (his wife is murdered). The perpetrators are never caught. Now, I'm not saying this makes rape look attractive, but when the perps get away with it, it violates even Hollywood's "code" of good wins out over evil.

...in the "Death Wish" series. Individual thugs maybe, but in the end, Charles Bronson offs far more criminals than the small handful that "get away" with their crimes. This would seem to be the entire point of the series (I think there were five "Death Wish" films): that some small number of criminals may go unpunished, but Bronson will punish (by shooting to death) many more criminals than that.

soap opera's seem not to have any problem glorifying rapist. Luke raped Laura but soon after that they became the hottest couple on TV. Todd on One Life To Live was a repeat rapist yet still was a popular character. When I still watched soaps I read an interview where the actor who played him said he left the show for awhile until they agreed to make his character less sympathetic because even he was bothered by his popularity.

You know the drill: on-screen romance depicted and applauded even though at least one of the people is cruel, selfish, and/or a menace to society (e.g., creepy corporate raider in Pretty Woman; narcissistic, insensitive, disloyal actress in Notting Hill). Some screenwriters seem to be trying our patience, counting on our credulity, and/or parading their own neuroses. Either that or producers and directors really want to test whether audiences will watch anything.

I'm not talking about those films where the jerk turns out not to be one (e.g., Pride and Prejudice, Much Ado about Nothing) or learns to be a better person (The Philadelphia Story, Walking and Talking) or where geekdom wins out over glamor (The Truth About Cats and Dogs), or where a couple compromises and hopes for the best (Mystic Pizza). Those stories, at least, give the audience someone to root for. But I don't want to see any more love stories where the audience is half-ready to perform an intervention before the final clinch.

Oh, I agree. There's no story if Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan don't hate each other's guts in The Shop Around the Corner. There is a long and noble literary and cinematic tradition of couples bickering their way into each other's arms.

But there's also a tradition of trotting out a Mr. or Ms. Wrong, to throw the heroine or hero off the scent of Mr. or Ms. Right. Nowadays I'm seeing more examples of matching the hero or heroine to the person who deserves to be dumped.
