Any punk fans out there?
I've been very depressed lately and punk is the only music that I've been able to tolerate, everything else seems like soppy shite. I don't if it's the anger in it or what, but it's keeping me alive.
God bless Johnny Thunders and Richard Hell.

3. Hooray! I thought I was alone.
I found a compilation from Rhino, "No Thanks! The Punk Rebellion of the 70's".

Fuckin Brilliant! Not a bad track in the whole collection. I just listened to "TRash " by the New York Dolls and now I'm playing "Oh Bondage up your" by XRay Spex. What an album!

5. YEAH!! That is a fantastic collection for sure. The New York
Dolls are my all time fave band, in fact I'm going to see 'em in a couple of weeks. Of course it won't be the same without the missing guys but I can't wait anyway.

Walter Lure from Thunders' other band, the Heartbreakers, still plays in NYC with his band the Waldos. Lots of great acts slugging it out there to this day. Yes, God Bless Johnny Thunders- Mr rock-n-roll hisownself!!

7. Damn straight!
I love it all, whether it's from NY, LA on UK. I have the Weirdos and Lee Ving as MySpace friends. During my younger days, late in the game, I got to see the Weirdos, Fear, X, the Dead Milkmen and the Dickies in LA at various times. I'm always up for a punk show but don't get many of them here in Austin. Mostly that emo crap. :banghead:

Believe me, whatever you get in Austin is 10 times more that we ever get! Some great stuff from around there circa early 80s- Big Boys, Butthole Surfers, Dicks, MDC.

I first heard this album tripping on acid in Venice, CA in the same apt that Jim Morrison used to live in. Jim wouldv'e dug it had he been alive.

17. I 'm doing slightly better
It's been a rough couple of days but I'm slowly starting to feel like myself again. I'm trying to navigate through the gauntlet known as my health insurance plan to get some therapy and meds. It's not easy but when my life depends on it, it makes the difficulty worth it. I think I'll make it even if it means gritted teeth every inch of the way.

26. I met El Duce back when he was still alive.
Duce was actually a really nice guy when sober. I had a friend that played drums for him. A big blond dude named Moose. I used to buy weed off of him in Hollywood. He also used to play with Just Say Yes with the Rev. Bud Green at Raji's. During the show , Moose would throw shitloads of pinners out into the audience. Bud was the one that got thrown off of Geraldo for lighting up on the set.

Ahh, Hollywood memories . . .

32. They were nuts
My favorite personal El Duce story: I was once checking some friends out playing at the 8121 Club on Sunset and Crescent Heights. Duce comes in and started picking up random drinks from people tables and chugging them , with the people right there> He did this til the staff threw him out. I left about a half hour later and Duce was out cold on the little strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. I thought about waking him up, but I knew that was dangerous, so I went home, leaving him there for his snooze.

36. I tried to talk him up at a bar in Fullerton
but it was late and he was five sheets to the wind, so conversation wasn't an option. He thought I was somebody he had been speaking with earlier and seemed confused that I didn't remember our earlier encounter. About the only threat he posed at that time was to clean carpet.

38. He used to visit Moose all the time.
I talked to him quite a few times but it was usually very early in the day. He was a fun guy when sober but when he was bussed, look out!!!

BTW, my old girlfriend went to HS in Fullerton. Memory fucking Lane!

As crazy as they were, I miss those days. I miss Raji's , which is now where the Vine Metro station is. I miss Zatar's on Wilcox where Astrid Young (Neil's sister ) used to tend bar. I miss eating mushooms at the Sidewalk Cafe in Venice with Louis Armstrong's grandson and a stripper from the Seventh Veil.

Memories . . .

40. Ever go to Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach?
There used to be absolute mayhem at that place. Orange County and Long Beach was more of our scene. Same shit, different area.

Oddly enough, the most violent, ape-shit-out-of-control show I ever saw was in San Clemente of all places. It was The Adolescents, JugHead's Revenge, and Circle one. It was the only show I had ever been to where I ran out the door because it devolved into a full blown riot.

47. what about Joe Strummer?
is the deal that punk can't be melodic, or are you talking about too much repetition? I suppose that's what makes some of it pop-punk.

Bad Religion does it well, I think. Lots to say, but it doesn't come across as too "poppy."

They pretty much invented skate punk though.

If you want some good new stuff, I would recommend A Wilhelm Scream I think. Or Gallows for some more hardcore stuff.

50. really?
I like NOFX - the imitators I could do without.... I also like opivy, kevin seconds and green day and that stuff. It's not punk like the 70's stuff was, but I think it's good music. I think the real lineage of punk sort of turns into electronic music, noise music and indie pop - tons of shit inspired by factory records, who were as punk as they come.

I'm not too hip to the Punk especially if it's come out since the 80's but if Fugazi counts, I'm MAD about them :headbang:

I have some good songs by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Rapture that I labeled punk but I don't know if I have it right.

I'm sort of an old man who has no idea what the kids are listening to these days, but newer bands that I really love are the mae shi, and gowns - sort of punk, in a way. I'm more interested in punk as a way of doing things than as a genre. In that sense, my old band (from earlier this decade.... circa 99-'04) was punk (shitty website here):
