Ever wish you could get a do-over in real life?
So I was picking up the kid at school. This requires I drive down the two-way access road. The community center is at one end, the high school at the other. There was something going on at the community center, so cars were parked on both sides of the access road. In the summer, this is not a problem since the cars park off the shoulder onto the grass. Because there is snow on the ground, the cars and trucks were parked in the road. I pulled in off the main road and drove past about 10 cars, stopped so an oncoming car could pass me at a wide spot, then proceeded. The next oncoming car entered the other end of the narrow spot and kept on coming. I tried to drive as far to the right as I could and ended up scraping the rear bumper of a truck. I had to go get the cop who patrols the high school and report the accident. No ticket, and I don't know what the insurance company will do. While the cop was writing up the accident report, there were several near misses by school buses running the gauntlet the same way I did.

The worst part? When I got out and looked, I discovered that the truck could have easily parked about 2 feet further in on the shoulder. It was sticking out past the car ahead of it. I'm kicking myself for not thinking fast enough to realize I should have just stopped and waited for the oncoming car to back up or give me a chance to back up. On the other hand, part of me says that people who block a road so they can park a little closer deserve scratch or two.

As I was leaving, the cop was going up to the community center to give the accident report to the truck owner (if the owner could be found) and also to make everyone move their cars!
