I have been told that my disher-style ice cream scoop is "elitist."
(The disher style is the one with the lever and the mechanism that pushes out whatever's in the scoop.)

Specifically, the "ice cream shovel" is the acceptable type. I do not know whether this person was talking about an actual shovel (in which case I've seen them as part of a gift set with a bucket for $22 on ebay), or a regular ice cream scoop without the lever or mechanism.

I used it today to scoop cupcake batter into the tins. It was a lot neater and more even than a spoon or spatula would have been. I also use it for pancake batter, cookie dough, and, yes, ice cream. I'm not anal about portion control or uniform pancakes, but if I don't have to clean up 10000 drips all over the place, all the better.

I'm not exactly sure what makes a device purchased for $7 at a restaurant supply store (open to the public) "elitist." Anyone care to enlighten me?

3. Comrade, is that a standard issue ice cream scoop, made with love by the worker?
Or was it made by capitalistic pig dogs on the back of the masses?

4. No clue, but I wonder how'd they feel about my heated ice cream scoop...
Uses a single C battery, click it on, and the ice cream is supposed to fall out. Doesn't work that well though. I had another scoop that had a bar that, when you pushed on a lever, scraped the ice cream off of the back of the scoop.

5. anything that is more than necessary could be seen as
a show of superiority.

Maybe your friend (ex-friend) thinks a common spoon is all you need.

I suppose if he/she are an outright utilitarianist he/she would recommend a spork http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/8ace/

6. Unless she's using a large table/serving spoon
that also has 100 different uses, she should shut up.

BTW just tell her if it's still considered elitist if you could effectively use it as a weapon against her. :P

8. I have one that has antifreeze in the handle
Totally sealed, of course. It's great... and second only to your "elitist" sometimes known as "classic" ice cream scoop.

11. or my Pampered Chef handy chopper, or the miniature version of the OP's ice cream scoop
which I use to make cookies, fill mini-muffin cups and other small jobs .

Anyone who is concerned over an ice cream scoop of any type being eliteist has way too much time on their hands and needs to come weed my garden

12. Nah, yer s'pposed ta dig the ice cream out with a
tool made of flint rock tied to a young sapling with a vine. Otherwise, you are just an elitist rich person laughing a the poor.

Look at you....laughing at the poor while you scoop your ice cream out with that fan-cy rich tool that cost more than the cardboard box the rest of us out here in "real" America live in. You pansy elitist you.

:P

OMG, I've heard it all now.

13. Elitist?? Gee, I have several of those in varying sizes, from
about half an inch across to 2 1/2 inchces across. I think I have five in total. I use them for lots of things, the least of which is ice cream.

Had no idea I was elitist! Finally I made it, and all because of ice cream scoops! WooHoo!

14. I always thought you were a snob :-P
I actually have a couple different sizes of those so I must be uber elite. And shhh, don't tell anyone but I don't even eat ice cream so mine are just for baking. We should start an elite liberal cooking group :silly:

15. It's a metal dealie used to dig food. Unless your servants are using
your platinum-plated, diamond-encrusted, heated (and cooled), ice-cream scoop, it is rather hard for a large spoon with a lever to be elitist.

Honestly, whoever thinks that must think my can opener makes me the snobbiest snob ever:
