Shelob wanted to debate the issues further.
"Will you walk into my parlour?"

Said the spider to the fly;

"'Tis the prettiest little parlour

That ever you did spy.

The way into my parlour

Is up a winding stair;

And I have many curious things

To show you when you're there."

Cry, "Attercop!" and be done with it. Onward!

1. Spiders are cool...
Was listening to a Tony Hillerman mystery- Shapeshifters and they talk a bit about techniques used in Navajo weaving.
Seems that you can get a really bright red dye from the egg sac of a certain desert spider...
and no, he didn't say which one...but who'da thunk it?

7. They're cool ... from a distance, and thru a lens.
Do you ever wonder how tribal or folk knowledge - of whatever sort - is acquired in the first place on stuff like that?

I still think the first meal of a lobster must've been one VERY hungry person.

4. ZI says it's a camel spider or wind scorpion.
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 11:44 PM by VenusRising
But it is neither a spider nor a scorpion. It is in it's own group. So sayeth my entomologist. :)

9. Pic #8 is from a park in Tx...
... it's from back when I was a Park Ranger... they closed down a section of that particular park just so entimologists (sp?) could come and study the spider web shown in that pic. It was really awesome... I was from a park far away, but I traveled just to see it.

Spiders are reeally cool! Thanks for sharing!

14. Thanks for the backstory on that!
We used to get those beautiful, fully-spun ones with dew in the mornings in West Virginia a lot.

Honestly, most kids I know treat spiders very differently than bees or ants. There's something inherently respect-commanding and distance-demanding about a web.

26. Got some spiders that have house priveleges...
...sorta.
Cute little things, as spiders go. Biggest ones are about three-eights of an inch long, dark grey, kind of fuzzy looking.
Their legs are short and 'muscular' rather than long and creepy in appearance, and they have the most beautiful (and impressive!) turquoise mandibles.
They don't seem to be much into web-spinning. :shrug:

House rule is "You don't bite me, I don't squish you...but you're on your own as far as the cats are concerned."
They mostly stay high on the walls or on the ceiling, but sometimes one will drop down and surprise me...
:wow:

The above detailed description is a subtle invitation for the resident entymologist to maybe put a name on the little guys? :hi:

Thanks!
