I have a 9 hour job interview on Friday

12 one-one-one sessions each lasting 30 minutes to an hour for a summer co-op (Like an internship but paid) that is required for my MBA program.

I never faced this kind of mass interviewing even when I was a teacher--there it was one, sample lesson, call back, and done.

Yay, corporate world!

1. I just had an 8-hr one last week!

It is completely exhausting... i recommend bringing along a bottle of water and some throat lozenges. I had a major sore throat by the end of the day.

2. Yeah the people there have already said bring water
What really is annoying is the department I really want to work with is my last set of interviews, so they're getting me cranky, tired, and with a gravelly voice.

I hope your interview went well. I'm looking forward to mine.

and i'm sure they'll understand! Probably some of them had to go through the same process.

Mine did go well, thanks! But i probably won't hear anything for another week or two.

What's the program you're applying for?

6. It's not exactly a program
It's a summer full-time job that can lead to a full-time offer if it goes well--call it a probationary period to move into the company.

9. We get a very nice lunch, networking with 1st and 2nd year executives, and a guest speaker
I'm ok with having my own bottle of water to sip on between interviews.

11. I've been through marathon interviews, too.
I suggest also carrying a handkerchief or a few tissues, and maybe a lozenge or cough drop or a few tic-tacs (easy to chew fast!) for after lunch. And as they say at interview lunches, make sure you order something very easy to eat -- no spaghetti or hand-held sandwiches (there really aren't any other kind - I think it looks kinda weird to eat a sandwich with knife and fork). Even some salads can be hard if the lettuce isn't chopped into manageable bites. Easy includes smaller pastas (orechiette, bowtie, etc.) or rice dishes.

4. What job in hell are you applying for?
If it takes that long, I would have serious reservations about competency of the people conducting them. I hire people for highly responsible positions and I can wind up job interviews in an hour tops. I usually get 12-20 qualified applicants, so if I were to take more than an hour I would never hire anyone.

5. Technically, I'm interviewing with 3 departments and talking one-one with vice presidents in each
This particular corporation is very big on behavioral-based interviewing, and, as such, their process is a lot of solo work with emphasis on seeing how you think, talk, act, etc.

From talking with others working there now, they're all very conversational in nature, and most of the people assume they do so many so that the VPs can discuss individual impressions on each person before making a decision.

What some companies put candidates through is just down right abusive IMHO. I can understand a screening interview and an interview with the team but more than that is OTT. When I was hiring I pretty much knew in the first 10 minutes if someone would fit in or not.

Where I work we do something similar. Then we all meet, discuss, and make our decision. The candidate has to work with a lot of people and crosses several departments, so we like to make sure that they are a good fit.

Our process works very well. And keep in mind - the interviewer is also interviewing!
