1. H_E_L_L_O!!?
GrandMaster Flash?

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five fomented the musical revolution known as hip-hop. Theirs was a pioneering union between one DJ and five rapping MCs. Grandmaster Flash (born Joseph Saddler) not only devised various techniques but also designed turntable and mixing equipment. Formed in the South Bronx, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were one of the first rap posses, responsible for such masterpieces as “The Message,” “Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel” and “White Lines.” The combination of Grandmaster Flash’s turntable mastery and the Furious Five’s raps, which ranged from socially conscious to frivolously fun, made for a series of 12-inch records that forever altered the musical landscape.

2. I'm referring to debut albums, specifically.
"Other" is also an option, too.

7. To me
Yo! had it's political moments, but it was the only pure rap record they ever made that can be listened to not as a thesis, but a party. And "Public Enemy No. 1" is almost hardcore-punk disguised as a b-boy rap.

I almost put down "Paid In Full"; what a record..

8. Have you read "Can't Stop Won't Stop"?
If you haven't, it's a well-researched look at the history of hip-hop. PE gets heavy mention, of course.

10. It's worth it, trust me.
And it goes beyond the music to explore all the surrounding social/political elements, too.

14. I agree with voters for "The Chronic" and the Erik B. and Rakim,
but for me, "Yo, Bum Rush the Show" was the most stunning debut.

Excellent poll!

22. Yep, it was.
And I'm still a big fan. Got into them by Disposable's cover of the Dead Kennedy's song California Uber Alles. DK's label, Alternative Tentacles, celebrated their 100th release by having bands do cover songs of DK. I was already into a few of the bands on there like Nomeansno, Faith No More and Alice Donut, but I ended up getting into every other band on the cassette (it was awhile ago lol) that I wasn't already into.

I know I like both DHOH and Paris because they took a punk attitude to hip hop, with a lot of political lyrics to go with the attitude. Public Enemy, Ice T, Ice Cube, etc, all did the same thing to various degrees. It was a cool time to be into both kinds of music.

20. Easy choice: the Beastie Boys.
C'mon, 3 white Jewish kids in a punk rock band from New York sample Zeppelin, tour with Madonna and sell millions of copies? You can't make that shit up. The music was great, the lyrics were so juvenile they were an instant classic.

Even the album cover...a joint made to look like a plane that says "EMTAE" (EAT ME) on it, right on the front of the damn thing?

Extra credit goes for being the stepping stone to "Paul's Boutique".

21. They were indeed an instant classic. The videos were
hilarious and lyrics even funnier. It didn't hurt to have the guy from Slayer play on the record too.

Well, the same with Public Enemy, but that's who I voted for...

24. It all fits under the hip-hop category.
Public Enemy was from NY, though, and not a gangsta group.

WU-TANG! :P

Paul's Boutique is amazing, though I have a hard time choosing that or Ill Communication as the best Beastie album.
