The nearest post office, to http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=hotchkiss+%22west+virginia%22">Hotchkiss, which has none, was Slab Fork. The rural postal route we were on was out of Slab Fork, and our bus picked up us Hotchkiss kids first, coming out to the end of the county road to get us, then backtracking to Slab Fork. Blink once, http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?city=Hotchkiss&state=WV&country=us">you'll miss it.

As irony would have it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedediah_Hotchkiss">it's not on most maps. But then again, neither was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shire_%28Middle-earth%29">The Shire. Slab Fork has a dip in the road that our bus driver took just the right way, every day, to provide a poor child's roller coaster, no coin required.

I usually had my nose stuck in a book (e.g., The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, or The Diary of Anne Frank), but all reading stopped for "the daily bounce." Hands up! No holding on to the seat in front of you! That's cheating!

1. Ah, my dear Dave...
Thank you for all of these...

They number among my favorite songs, and that's the truth...

The last one makes me cry...

Too close to the bone for me...

I am touched that you would go to all this trouble for me...

2. Madam, you are the essence of these songs, which are of the hallowed hollers of my homeland.
