7. There was an italian guy working at the pizza place where I used to work.
He'd use the americanized pronunciations around there so that the customers could understand him. But if he accidentally used the american versions around his family he'd get smacked upside the head.

Every now and then he'd forget. :P

6. I know that Wiki says that
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 07:06 PM by hippywife
but I've never, ever heard it like that and I grew up in an Italian family. I don't know if someone's hearing is off and that's what they think they heard or what. I've always heard it pronounced cop-a-call.

14. Or just "coppa"
In fact, the Italian delis around here have it on the board that way. It threw me for a loop, having been trained to say the whole word by my Boston Italian friends. "Coppa-call" is close to the way they said it but the c was softer than usual, and I guess that some would hear it as a g.

19. Not Italian
But in the English upper classes (Aristocracy)

The surname Cholmondely is pronounced "Chumley" and Featheringstonehaugh is pronounced "Fanshaw".
Prince Charles is pronounced "Horse" and Lady Camilla is pronounced "Mare".

I will someday be pronounced "Dead".

Mike
