Infarction, WTF!?!
I injured myself last December surfing. My primary health care is via the Veterans Administration. Today I saw my doctor following a MRI on my shoulder. Before the test my doctor was certain that I tore a tendon in my shoulder. The results show a lesion that suggests that I have a infarction on my upper humorous (arm bone).

An infarction is dead tissue, in my case bone. It occurs on bone rarely, mainly due to three conditions.
1. Advanced alcoholism; I don't drink, smoke, or anything like that.
2. Sever diabetes; My blood sugar is tested on a regular basis and is always fine.
3. Sickle Cell Anemia, I've been to Africa but have no symptoms of that disease, and my heritage is Chiricacau Apache, not a risk group for Sickle Cell.

I have a physical therapy session scheduled tomorrow, but it was made on the assumption that I had tendon damage. I'm going anyway to ask if I can resume surfing. If I extend my right arm anywhere close to shoulder high it causes damn near unbearable pain, but fuck it I going to paddle out anyway. Friday I have a cat scan to get a better handle on what is happening, and I wont see my doc till late March. If something weirder shows on the cat scan my doc will give me a call..

Not looking for sympathy or vibes, I can produce my own. It's just weird.

3. i do have one suggestion (which you may have already tried)
there are different kinds of diabetes, if you have only had your resting blood glucose measured in the morning, before you have eaten, a common way to test for type 2 diabetes, it is possible that you had a normal reading

you need another test, after you have eaten, to test for other forms of diabetes, such as MODI (mature onset type 1 diabetes)

they tested that lady who stars in weeds, many times, and told her she didn't have diabetes, because they only gave her the first test, her name is mary louise parker, and you can probably google the story online but i actually read it at the doctor's office -- it did turn out that she had MODI

i would hope with all the publicity your doctors have already looked for this, if they haven't though, it would be well to suggest it

good luck and get well soon

4. I had never heard of MODI before.
I am at risk for diabetes because of hereditary reasons. Thats why I stay on top of it, and have cut my sugar intake without doctor prompting. I will bring up MODI next time I see my doctor.

Thank you for the information.

6. it isn't just sugars that will drive up blood sugar
It's also, importantly, carbohydrates. The body converts carbs to sugar. So that's something to consider. High carbs can drive your glucose way, way up.

Another test that might be interesting is the one that captures three months of blood sugars. HgbA1C. Just a simple blood test.

5. Don't forget the "mainly due" bit as there are always people, like you, that fall outside the
mainly bits. And the "suggests" bit. Get a second opinion because it could be a torn tendon anyways. "suggests" and "mainly due to" are not accurate.

Weird.
