Lousy Day
Not tragic mind you just generally lousy.

Had internet connection problems this morning. Apparently it was related to more permanent repairs of line damage done in the December ice storms.

The dogs refused their breakfast. Each wanted to eat the other's food. Both got mad when it was removed a half hour later still mostly untouched.

Went to get an oil change at the 30 minute or its free place. They wouldn't even try. Shorthanded today apparently. Ended up having to go to a dealership. Cost twice as much. Worse yet was the chatty yuppie repuke I had to share the waiting room with. No, I didn't have to go to a dealership. There is a chain of quick lube places. Haven't been there since some idiot working there drove a friend's truck off into the big hole in the floor. Really. OK. I do have to smile a bit at that memory.

Went to pick up some tools that were on sale at a local little place. Sold out. Although they might get another shipment on Friday. Might being the operative word. Clerk was obviously sick and hacking. Coughing all over everyone.

Went to the post office to pick up a piece of certified mail. They refused to let me have it even though I had written authorization to pick it up. Now mind you I have been picking up mail for this person since October. But that's another story.

Went to the grocery store and it was wicked crazy. Had to hike in from the far corner. That may have been the highlight of the day.

Discovered the younger dog has been throwing up hairballs. Again.

Picked up my own mail and discovered that my home has been reassessed at $10,000 more in value (yeah right). It is now official. The property taxes on this quarter acre lot with a small 60 year old home in red state hell with a poor economy and lots of turnpikes and really bad roads is 1.5 times that of a family member with a new home with twice the square footage of mine built on four acres in a place with a small but growing economy. I gotta move outta here. Soon.

Took the dogs out the sliding door into the backyard and had the handle break off in my hand. Mind you we go in and out that door at least five to ten times every day. No warning there was anything wrong with the door handle whatsoever. And the handle was fairly new. Replaced it about a year ago. Do door handles have to be replaced annually these days?

So I went shopping for sliding door handles. First two places I stopped didn't have door handles that fit my centers. Finally found one. Black not white. Still not installed. Dark when I got home.

After all that I thought I would stop by my favorite take out place and pick up something for dinner. Didn't have any opportunity to get lunch. The drive through line snaked around the building through the parking lot and down the street. There wasn't any parking. So I settled for something else. Something else that was not quite what I had in mind.

Log on to DU only to find that my star and all my bookmarks and such have expired. I had been advised that my star expired on the 13th. Silly me. I thought that meant I had until the end of the day to donate.

So tell me something funny. Please?

1. Not really funny, but something to think about
My daughter got to meet and work with a young man from Dafur. Yeah, he and his comrades walked out of that hell to avoid being drugged and made to fight a war they wanted not part of. They were all just youngsters.

One day, he overheard someone in the office, complaining about something that vexed her no end. He calmly asked if it was as bad as seeing your best friend eaten by a lion.

Sometimes, what helps a really bad day is a deep breath and some perspective.

I feel for ya, bandit. Sometimes it does seem the fates are making sport of us. But look around... no lions? See, things aren't as bad as they feel.

 Tomorrow will be better.

2. No lions
and all minor irritating stuff. Just not used to it happening consecutively.

Thanks

3. bandit, sometimes I think maybe we get some sort of bad energy vortex
whirling around us and it just sorta turns everything to crap. The more we focus on it, the more bad energy we seem to attract.

In my advanced years, I have noticed just doing something really silly and making myself laugh will somehow turn the energy around. Find yourself a silly site and play a bit. Or go out and do something really child like and have a good belly laugh.

I want you to feel better so you can turn back the vortex.

5. My mom appealed her assessment...
When they reassessed, it was with the assumption that her attic could be renovated into a full second floor. But she remembered that years ago, a contractor had told her that this was not possible because the gable was too low. She was successful in her appeal, and they knocked about $10,000 off the value of the house.

It's a pain in the ass to make the arrangements; but it may well be worth it.

I'm sorry your day was so sucky.:hug::hug:

6. I'm
going to investigate making that appeal. I'm guessng the revaluation is based on average square footage values in the neighborhood. It is an odd mix of homes and I think it could be argued that isn't a fair basis for assessment.

Thanks for the hugs.

Was through your area a couple of weeks ago. Used to get there more often.

15. 2001 and 2007
14 days with no power the first time. The ice then stuck to the ground not the trees.
12 days with no power in 2007. The ice stuck to the trees and they came tumbling down. Take a look:

16. That's awful
I was without power for a week in December after our storm. I know folks that were out longer.

When tree limbs started cracking in the middle of the night my dogs started barking at the strange sounds. They kept cracking and falling for about the next 24 hours here in my old growth neighborhood.

I've been here in Northeast Oklahoma for quite a while and I don't remember ice like this before the last few years. Hate it.

Not fond of tornadoes either.

17. My son lives in Brookside
He borrowed the generator and chain saw. He had to clear the back yard before the electric could be restored. Tulsa did a much better job with limb disposal than Muskogee did. We had to deal with smoke for months. They burned all the limbs in 3 locations. One was on the way to our house.

19. No
generator or chain saw here during the power outage. But I had gas logs, hot water, candles, a radio, and camping equipment. Used the patio as a refrigerator.

I had removed two big diseased trees a few years back and trimmed up the remaining trees. I only had one small split hanging limb. Got somebody to climb and trim it for $20. THere is still tree debris in my neighborhood that hasn't been picked up. THe city only started pickup here in the last few days.

I am amazed a the debris every time I drive down Riverside past Johnson park. I can't imagine living near a debris removal site - whether the debris was burned or mulched. I imagine disruptive is an understatement.

20. Awww, shucks
Thank you.

Since first posting I've been thinking about my friend's truck that was driven off into the hole in the floor in the quick lube place. She went into the waiting area and was reading. The waiting area had a big picture window looking out to the work area. There was a woman sitting across from her. My friend says the woman's eyes got really big and she asked who drove the tan Ford pickup. My friend turned to see her truck wedged in the hole in the floor with one rear tire still bravely holding to the upper level. The kid that was driving was trapped inside. Turns out the manager had directed him as he was pulling into the work area. All the guys there went and got underneath the truck and pushed it up and backwards onto solid ground. Yes, there was body damage. Yes the quik lube place paid for it. The kid that was driving was fired as soon as he opened the door. My friend has free oil changes there for life and has taken advantage of it for years. I try to see the situation from different perspectives and can't help but find the whole situation funny. Not sure why. I guess it is just one of those things you don't think ever really happens.

21. You find it funny because it IS!
That's freaking hilarious  I can visualize the entire scene perfectly. And am literally laughing out loud. It's good that they repaired the damage to the truck, and hey she gets free oil changes... plus it makes for an awesome story to tell.
