I am not growing a beard, I've just been going for a few days without shaving... I'm in grad school right now.

Should I be worried? Is all my hair going to start graying in a few years? Or is it just stress?

Peace,

2. I'd rather get gray hairs than thinning hair.

Edit: My hair started thinning when I was 18 and I'll be 26 in April.

24. Sounds like my dad
When he came back from his freshman year of college his friends asked him where his hair went. The whole top of his head was bald by about 25.

5. I got my first gray hair in 8th grade.
Gray was very visible by high school, at least half in college, and I'm almost 100% gray/white now in my 30's.

Don't sweat it. :7

28. I looked at cutaneous water loss in hatchling develpment...
for my master's thesis.

Title: Development of skin structure and cutaneous water loss in nestling desert House Sparrows from Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The outer layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum (SC), contains lipids and corneocytes, which together form layers that limit cutaneous water loss (CWL). We examined the development of structure of the SC and CWL in nestling House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) from Saudi Arabia. We measured CWL of nestlings, and characterized development of their epidermis using electron microscopy. We tested two antagonistic hypotheses, that CWL decreases as nestlings age, a response to increased thickness of SC, and an opposite idea that CWL increases as nestlings age even though the number of layers of the SC remains constant. CWL of nestling House Sparrows varied with developmental stages, in a nonlinear fashion, but not significantly so. CWL of nestlings averaged 7.31 +/- 1.5 g H2O/(m(2) h), whereas for adults it was 4.95 g/(m(2) h); adult CWL was 67.7% that of nestlings. We found that morphology of the SC did not change linearly with age, but seemed to vary with developmental stage. CWL decreased as the SC thickness increased and as the total thickness of the corneocytes increased. Further, we found that CWL decreased as the thickness of the extracellular space increased, number of corneocytes increased, and proportion of the SC that is extracellular space increased.

I can send you the full paper or my thesis, if you're really interested. Cheers!

9. My dear battleknight24!
I started pulling white hairs out of my head at age 20...

But I still had mostly dark hair at 40...

Now my hair is all silvery, and quite pretty!

Go with the flow sweetie...

10. Gray hair is sexy. Go with it.
My beard went gray before my hair, so maybe you've got a while. I think those little gray accents just add to your character. Be proud of it.

But I have a number of friends in their mid20s who are almost all grey--just roll with it and accept that grey hair is "in" again thanks to people like Anderson Cooper and George Clooney.

15. Started showing up at 24
It was a moment when I realized that I was going to die someday.

It really kicked in when the children were teens.

At 49, it's about 50/50.

17. Got my 1st silver hair when I was 17
Now I'm 37 (how in the hell did I get to be 37?! - That's for another thread though!). The hair at my temples/side is about 50/50 now. Starting to see lots of silver sprinkles on top too.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world and if you really hate it you can always dye it. :)

She had me when she was 21. I went totally gray by the time I was about 24. It runs in my family. We are neurotic though, so I don't know how to answer you about the stress. Hair dye?

22. lol...i posted a similar thread here about 4 years ago
when i was 27...I've had the random white hair now and then ever since I was about 10...

I started getting a few more that stayed when i was about 24...I thought it was just the stress of economic pressures while being unemployed (and later, the stress, depression and disillusionment of my job when i first did get employed)...

Now i'm about 5 percent white, with it creeping up a little each month...back when i first asked the lounge, i was hoping to find some kind of reversal, but it doesn't seem to matter as much as it once did...

23. My gray started about your age also-
My gray started about your age also-- only in beard. And at 41, it's still confined to my beard for the most part, although I've got the odd strand or two of gray on my head of hair, but nothing really to speak of.

Just my own experience there...

Perhaps it goes with the territory? 20 yrs later and I'm just about totally gray. Meanwhile both my parents just went gray in the last 10 years. Not fair, I claim.

34. I started going grey in my early 20s. Very early 20s. It slowly but surely
progressed and at 40+ I am almost totally grey. I wouldn't worry about a few grey hairs. Especially in a beard. I had more than a few at your age.
