Just heard from two parishioners who were at NIU this afternoon.
I have two church members doing doctoral work at Northern Illinois University. I called to check on both of them, and left messages on voice mail. They've both called back, and are fine. One was very near the shooting though, and was locked in the library for a time before being evacuated. The other was on her way home from class when the shooting started, and wasn't on campus.

Prayers, vibes, good wishes are appreciated for all those affected.

1. I am glad they were safe.

My heart is breaking for all of the people affected by yet another senseless tragedy.

2. It really is one of those things you think can't happen here,
and yet....

My heart is breaking, too. Thanks, KW!

4. And thank you for the work you do, mc2
So important in terms of not just their own families checking in on them, but the sense that a community they belong to is checking in on them as well. That is, I imagine the school will be providing some support services when things resume, but, here when they need it most, you are their reminding them they've got a caring community to relay on.

How very important.

6. Thank you, Darkstar!
That's what I was thinking, that they need to know their faith community is here for them at this really frightening time. Neither of them spoke for long, as they both said they had a ton of calls to return. One of 'em added "and a lot of the calls are from church people." That was good to hear, that I serve a caring community. I think this is one of the most important things congregations do--support one another as community.

Thanks for your kind words!

8. I keep remembering my undergrad days,
and how safe we felt on campus. I was at a large university, too (Illinois State), and it never crossed our minds that this could've happened. I feel so bad for everyone whose sense of security is shattered by this.

And so much more so to those shot.
