when is it appropriate to move beyond victimhood?
can being engaged in some healing process indefinitely be counterproductive in the long run?

1. I think it would depend upon how traumatic the victimization was
and whether the person was making any kind of progress in their healing process.

6. i've wrestled with that
there are some things that remain fresh even though they happened more than 30 years ago.

i guess time mitigates most stuff.

i've often wondered if you can just decide to not be affected by the past.

7. I think that depends also upon the person's disposition.
It might certainly be a good start to try and counteract the negative thoughts with more positive ones.

8. I think you should be "affected by the past" always.
Your past is what has helped define you.

The important thing is to learn from it and move on. Be stronger because of what you've experienced, not weaker (which is what perpetual victimhood implies).

3. It's appropriate to do it as early as immediately.
But one can also take longer, certainly - but for the sake of one's health, the sooner the better.

4. If the rope is thrown in time, AND depending on the cause of the crippling.
For example, let's just say I've come a long way. And have a long way to go, even with the bastards...

Victimhood is to wallow in emotions.

Surviving is attempting to push aside the emotions to do what needs to be done.

And to grow a shell is important. A big band-aid so the fuckers can't continue to play with your brain for their paltry amusement.

Or, depending on the situation, find out what it takes and join them! :D

5. Yes. Perpetual victimhood is counterproductive. As is righteous indignation.

9. As someone who's a victim of incessant victimization, I take great indignation at your insensivity.
:silly:

11. Wha?
I've always found my righteous indignation very productive.
