Anyone ever been north of the Arctic Circle?
I was just thinking that it would be a really interesting trip to make. I would go in the summer for the first time, but it must be wild to see the sun all day. I'm interested in travel, but want to go to unique destinations.

1. I have
we hiked and pitched a tent to get some sleep before heading back. The mosquitoes were so big you could hear them hitting the tent walls trying to get to us.

we worked the summer in Denali and it was pretty cool, we camped out the whole summer and our refrigerator was a 4 foot deep hole in the ground. it was below the permafrost line and stayed a steady 39 degrees

2. Yes, in the Navy. I can't reccomend it.
Chopping ice off the bow to keep from sinking isn't my idea of a vacation.

It would probably be pretty cool on land, though. :hi:

3. Haha, good point
I am in the Navy as well, and things always seem like more fun on land and without the Navy!

Polar view of the arctic circle:

Is someone else watching Hunt of Red October on Spike? It begins in the north Atlantic north of the arctic circle.

5. I've been to Circle, Alaska,
which is just 50 miles south of the arctic circle. That's as far north as I've been here. The only road that runs up past the arctic circle is the Pipeline Haul Road, which we really want to do sometime, but it's a really long stretch of gravel road.

http://www.hulteen.com/eric/deadhorse.html

The Dalton Highway, a.k.a., the "haul road", is 414 miles long and connects the Elliott Highway (north of Fairbanks) to Deadhorse, Alaska --the farthest north you can drive on Alaska's road system. The road is gravel, the steepest grade is 12 percent (a 12 foot rise in elevation for every 100 foot of travel), the highest summit is Atigun Pass at 4,800 feet, and the major attraction is the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The road is open to travelers all year.

6. Ms Darkstar may go to Tromso, Norway this summenr
She works as a scientific (ecology) editor and is currently working on a Arctic flora and fauna biodiversity and mapping project.

There's supposed to be a big meeting this summer up there. I'm kind of jealous. On top of the travel, this area actually has a fairly vibrant electronic music scene and one of my favorite outfits, Biosphere, actually hails from Tromso.

and several other shorter (days-weeks) trips to Arctic Norway and Alaska.

Ellesmere Island (CA), NW Greenland and Spitzbergen (NO) would be the places to go...and there is commercial plane service to just about anywhere in the Canadian Arctic...

9. I've flown almost directly over the North Pole.
Never got to set foot on the ground, though. :(
