9. The Blue is my favorite
that beluga's just TOO cute!

I watched a show about Blue whales last week that said they're the biggest animal that's ever lived on Earth and scientists don't know where and how they breed and everywhere they travel so they're ..mysterious.. and they live off little krill so they're also mellow & peaceful.

14. I love all whales
I don't know if I could pick just one. Maybe Orcas cause they have such interesting behavior..There are "native" groups that stay in one place their whole lives and feed mostly on salmon and other fish. Then there are the nomads that wander form place to place and eat seals, sea lions, dolphins, sharks..etc. Very complex social structures

41. I suppose so, Orca sightings are not too unusual in our area. My personal Orca stories:
I live in western Washington State. My home is quite close to the sea, I can see Commencement bay out my window just fine. (I LOVE THAT!) Orcas are seen frequently enough all up and down Puget Sound. At least once per year the news helicopters will spot a pod of Orcas doing there thing out in "the Sound".

The first time I saw a pod of Orcas was when I was in kindergarten. My father used to scuba dive in and around Commencement bay, and I used to follow him onshore carrying a large rubber bag that my dad would fill with flounder and cod. One day while we were doing this a small Coast Guard ship pulled up very close to my dad's dive spot and a coast guardsmen addressed me with a megaphone. He instructed me to raise one hand for yes and two hands for no, then he asked me if there was a diver down in the water in front of me. I raised one hand signaling yes. Then he told me that I had to tell the diver to get out of the water when next he surfaced and to raise one hand if I understood him. I raised my hand again. Then he told me that there was a pod of Orcas nearby and that they would keep the ship between the pod and the diver until he came up.

Sure enough there really was a pod of Orcas just beyond the coast guard ship. I would estimate that they were perhaps two stones throw distant from where I was standing on the shore. A short while later my dad came up with a stringer loaded with flounders. As he came ashore I told him that he had to get out of the water. This angered him because...well NOBODY told my dad what to do, ESPECIALLY one of his kids! I told him that the guys on the coast guard ship behind him had told me to tell him that he had to get out of the water. When he turned around the coastguard man with the megaphone told my dad what was up plus we could plainly see the 6 or so Orcas still hanging out nearby. They were in no particular hurry, they seemed to be lazily moving parallel to the shore. We watched them and the coast-guard vessel for maybe another half hour before they moved off. Needless to say, my dad was in no hurry to get back in the water that day.

Many, many years later I had a summer job as the "ten-per-center" on a small gill net boat. We fished for salmon up near the San Juan Islands and sometimes up in Boundary Bay. One day while waiting to drop our net, a pod (or more) of Orca whales came through our area. They were chasing a LARGE school of silver salmon. The salmon were leaping out of the water everywhere around our little boats, (there were a bunch of other gill-netters staking out a place to drop their nets as well). I was amazed by the size of the school of salmon as I could see jumpers pretty much as far as I could see in all directions. The Orcas were not so close this time but I could definitely see when their fins came out of the water and the salmon jumping out of the water trying to get away. The boat's owner was not at all impressed with the orcas because he said they had destroyed one of his nets a few years earlier but he was impressed with the school of salmon. He said he had never seen anything like what we were witnessing. The "show" went on for perhaps an hour and then the Orcas moved beyond sight. Eventually after things calmed down, we got the signal to drop our nets. That was our BEST day by far of fishing, we damn near swamped the boat bringing the net and all those salmon aboard. All the boats around us were doing pretty good business as well. I wound up earning $1200 for my one day of work, (my "ten percent"), when on a normal day I would have been lucky to have gotten $30!

27. When I went to University of Maryland
One of the professors there was Dr. Eugenie Clark, the shark lady they called her. She was one of the foremost experts on whale sharks and you could see all these different pictures of her hanging on to their dorsal fins.
She did a lot of work for National Geographic society. Sadly, I believe she passed away a few years ago but I did get the opportunity to talk with her once or twice.Fascinating lady,

44. California Grey and the Killer whales are my favorites as I've seen them both before
The Blue whale is on my shit list because it busted up a 40 foot offshore racing catamaran that I had worked on for years and was my chief source of employment. The boat got towed to shore and we cut it up with a chainsaw and tossed the pieces, sans hardware, into a huge dumpster - a total loss, but totally insured, too.
