Ever play marbles?

Steelies were ball bearings.
Logrollers were giant marbles, about and inch in diameter.
You either played 'keepsies' or 'funsies'.

The cry "Hard down knucks, no fudging!" meant your index or 'shooter' knuckle had to be touching the ground and if you 'fudged' you raised your knuckle.
The extra elevation might give you an edge if your hand was steady.
