1. Ally Mc Beal, and Sex in the City--heard they were good , so checked em out
I don't know if I was more embarrassed for watching , or for the people involved in making the shows, or for the people, including critics, that actually thought they were good. In both cases, I still can't decide which was worse, the writing or the acting. Watched each a second time, just to see if I just caught em on a bad day, but equally horrendous. That Seventies Show would be a ( dis) honorable mention...Don't watch enough TV to really be able to think of five, but I'm sure there are plenty of possibilities, including probably about every "reality " show...

Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 10:53 PM by abq e streeter
Actually, Married With Children was, in my not particularly humble opinion, brilliantly , if inconsistently funny, for about its first five years. Unfortunately, it ran for about eleven, and the writers seemed to run out of ideas . If you've never seen the Christmas episode early on where the shopping mall Santa crashes into their yard, its typical of the subversive humor they had for awhile, a savagely funny rebuke to all the smarmy, maudlin Christmas shows everywhere else.. But ultimately they mutated to Al mugging for the camera, and pandering to the fans who saw Al as a hero instead of the clueless, coarser updated Archie Bunker he was . Two telling lines of their initial subversiveness: When their kids are locked out of the house , the yuppie neighbors come by looking for the parents. When Bud and Kelly plead for help because they're "cold, and hungry, please help us", the reply is: "We can't. We're republicans". And in a similar vein, when Peg walks into the living room and Al is watching a monster truck show or something like that on the TV, Peg looks at the TV and says" Wow, PBS really has changed since the republicans took over". Lots of other great commentary on lowest common denominator American culture for a few years ( and they WERE wildly inconsistent) before the show gave in and became part of that lowest denominator. Just my opinion. Have a good, mostly TV-less night.

Give me channels and times, I can record them. I am always willing to expand my "to do list"

I just work a lot of hours and depend on DISH to record the good stuff.

9. They are all on PBS stations. I am a news and documentary junkie.
Last night Frontline did a piece on the Haditha massacre and then Independent Lens did one on methamphetamine addiction in Tennessee. They were both excellent.

I don't get any cable or satellite stations, but I can live off PBS (which I get through the air - for FREE!!).

"Wife Swap", "Bridezillas" and "The Office". The Office is embarassing and makes me cringe, not laugh. And how in the world is that little doofus on "How I Met Your Mother" cast as some kind of chick magnet?

21. Rich kids turn 16...
Parents slobber all over the "accomplishment". Family rents large downtown nightclub. TV crews showcase the child handing out invitations to select members of highschool and gatekeepers excluding others. Child is normally dressed in completely age-inappropriate clothing. Parents buy child car. Everyone in attendance or viewing at home is enticed to think that this is how it's supposed to be.

There are two things that REALLY piss me off though. The outrageous sense of entitlement the rich kids feel and the pathetic fawning shown by some of the other kids.

28. I'm going to get flamed, but...
1. The Family Guy-people I worked with seemed to like it, the animation looked cute, so I checked it out. Happened to catch the ep where the baby and the daddy spent quality time torturing the mommy. For some reason I didn't find that funny...

2. Seinfeld-watched part of an ep, said "WTF is this?" and never turned it on again.

3. David Letterman turned me off years ago by behaving like an asshole to his guests. Only watch him now when someone I like is on.

4. Friends-Gen-X angst. Who gives a shit?

5. Survivor-Mostly pretty people out in the wilderness getting naked, killing things and doing silly stunts. I'm waiting for the producers to kill one of them to give the ratings a boost.

Going to give an honorary to any sport shown on more than one network at the same time. :hide:

52. I hate Family Guy too
As David Eddings would say, it's a show far too impressed with its own supposed cleverness.

Seth Macfarlane is an unfunny hack who wishes he had a tenth of Matt Groening's (or even Parker and Stone's) talent. The worst part about that show, besides the animation, is the fact that it doesn't know how to let a joke go. On the rare occasions it's actually funny, they drag the joke out and beat it into the ground until the funny's gone.
