Unable to answer such simple questions such as "In what war was the invasion of Normandy in?" and "What was the name of the ship the Pilgrims came to America in?"

First thing the next morning they'd be out on their ass. No severance.

I will have no one that goddamn stupid working for me.

How the hell do they even get into college?

Then again the one college student he had on today was an Elementary Ed major. Elementary Ed majors generally aren't looking to earn a BA, or BS, they want an MRS degree.

1. On the flipside,
you have to wonder what schools are letting them get good enough grades to get into college without actually teaching them anything.

Of course, the answer to that is probably going to be 99% of american high schools... because the whole system is set up in such a way that the only way to get the 'good' jobs is to go to college. So people who wouldn't have even gone to college 50 years ago are going. So in turn, everything has to be dumbed down to make sure they get in. And they're diluting the college experience for the people who actually want to learn.

Of course, if our economy were decent, people wouldn't all be trying to get the white collar jobs. A family would be able to actually live off of a blue collar salary.

7. I do laugh at those segments, but in way I think it's pretty harsh to make fun
Imagine it - you're walking along, minding your own business, and Jay freakin' Leno pops out of nowhere with a camera. I'd probably forget most of what I know and make a total fool of myself...

8. Okay. So...
Who was buried in Grant's Tomb?

Who did they name the "Baby Ruth" candy bar after?

How many beers are in a six pack?
Bonus: How many Cokes are in a 24 Pack?

On what day is the Fourth of July celebrated?
Bonus: How about Cinco De Mayo?

What animal is depicted on the front of a Buffalo Nickel?

What was the Trojan Horse made of?
It's a trick question... you sick, dirty, bastard!!

10. Excuse me? Nice way to smear teachers
Incidentally, cultural illiteracy may be abhorrent but may not bear upon one's ability to do the job (at least not in a direct sense). The fellow in the next cubicle over is a fine programmer, but needed some background information when I told him I wanted to see Johnny Depp play Robespierre.

11. What's the best way to get rid of stupid people?
Take away the warning signs and let nature take it's course.

I wouldn't worry -- they'll be gone in no time.

Could you be a bit more of a condescending asshole? Nope. Didn't think so.

Speaking of people who sound like complete morons when they open their mouths (or in this case, hit the 'post message' button)...

18. It's not the El. Ed. majors who are the problem
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 11:27 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
It's the high schools that want a winning team above all else, so they give their sports coaches a few social studies or English classes to teach, just to keep them busy before 3:00PM. I suffered through several of these in grades 7 to 12. The worst (9th grade civics), told us to read the textbook chapter again and again all hour while he sat up front reading Sports Illustrated.

And who creates dumbed-down schools? In the typical suburb or small town, it's the local voters.

A few years ago, one of the small towns in Oregon had to make drastic budget cuts. In a typical American move, they cut art and music. But when they tried to cut the football team, the townspeople rose up in anger and have since raised enough money each year to keep it going. This was portrayed as a "heartwarming" story. I consider it another indication of the basic dumbness of American mass culture.

Districts that want really excellent public schools (e.g. college towns) get them.

19. OK, I may have come out as overly harsh last night.
Jaywalking segments tend to do that to me. They tend to bring out the misanthropic asshole in me. If I insulted anyone, including our elementary school teachers out there who work their asses off for peanuts every day, I'm sorry. I know it's no excuse, but if you could find it in your heart to forgive me for the really stupid things I said last night that would be cool.

I admit it. I was wrong. I let my perceptions of a few Elementary Ed majors that I knew in college cloud my judgment.
