The temperature hit ninety degrees the day she arrived.
New York was steaming--an angry concrete animal caught unawares in an unseasonable hot spell. But she didn't mind the heat or the littered midway called Times Square. She thought New York was the most exciting city in the world.

4. It's very possible that a lot of people love the book but just don't remember the opening passage
I'm that way with most of the books I love.

The Lester Bangs anthology Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung is one of my all-time favorite books but I'd have to pull it off the shelf to tell you which band he writes about in the first piece.

Valley of the Dolls is a rocking good book even though I confess that I cheated by merely typing that phrase into Google.
