I've never heard of a cartoonist doing this, either. It will be interesting to see.

1. I've never heard of such a thing either. (And it's too bad about her marriage. :^( )

5. Given that the the parents were modelled after her and her husband
that does sort of change things. :(

They were sort of an ideal couple in the strip.

I read somwhere that everyone except April was modeled after someone real in her family. April was the only fabricated main character.

6. I think Laurence, Michael's friend, was modelled after her brother.
Her brother is gay, apparently. And she modelled Laurence after her brother came out as gay. I appreciated that she drew the storyline of Laurence coming out. I understand she got some ugly hate mail after that, though.

9. She has written about Lawrence's story on her website.

I remember that time frame. I must have been totally ignorant..I had no idea she or the papers had received such hate mail.

and you're close..it was a brother-in-law that inspired Lawrence's story.

I'm sad to see the strip ending in the way we've known it.

3. I learned to read in part because of that strip
The kids were around my age and I liked seeing what they were up to. I even wrote her a letter and sent her one of my favorite strips and she wrote back and sent the strip back, signed.

I agree--it will be interesting to see what she does with it.

4. I've noticed the flash back strips for a while and wondered
where she was going with that. I hope it all works out for her. In case anyone is interested, she does have a website:

http://www.fborfw.com/index.php

She's also affiliated with The Farley Foundation.

Snip:

The Farley Foundation helps sick and injured pets that belong to low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

10. I *thought* I was seeing older strips
The ones running in my local paper seemed old (the original kids were still children). That explains why.

11. Huge risk, really...
At the time FBOFW debuted, the timing was right for the strip, and steamrolled into a huge success. Timing is everything in the comics, as it is with most everything.

Should be interesting to see how she pulls this off.
