9. I loved the man and woman who wrote the song from Once...
they were adorable. I was happy to see Jon Stewart bring her back on stage so she could give her thanks. The story Jon told about them making their Oscars kiss behind stage had me laughing. :D

They are now a couple in real life. I loved that Jon Stewart brought her back out too. I was just soooooo happy for them.

20. How can that song be eligible for an Oscar?
It's on the Frames' CD Cost, which came out a long time before the movie. My understanding is that in order for songs to be eligible, they have to be written especially for the movie. This clearly wasn't.

24. It WAS written for the movie.
The Frames (who are fronted by Glen Hansford) CD came out AFTER the movie had been completed, but BEFORE it had been released.

If it had not been for the movie that song would have never existed.

6. Well that makes sense then. I don't understand why exactly, but it makes
better sense of what they ended up with.

4. Those songs were padding...
...so that they could fill out the category. Ya gotta have 5 songs, or no award can be given out.

10. Movie looked a little too saccharin for me
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 01:44 PM by GoneOffShore
But then I thought No Country was gratuitous and didn't like it either.

on edit:

And the songs on Mr Rogers Neighborhood worked in context as well. Some of them were earworms.

15. that's fine - no movie can suit everyone

*Spoiler alert*

Enchanted was a fairy tale - and it poked a lot of fun at Disney animated princess movies. Two of the songs nominated last night were really part of the poking fun parts of the movie - particularly the first one sung "Happy Working Song" which in the movie is sung while she is cleaning up a very dirty apartment with the help of her animal friends...pigeons, rats, and cockroaches (these being the animals one finds in a city). I personally really liked the cleverness of the song.

the whole sendup attitude of that movie.

11. Adapted songs are not eligible
Usually these movies adapted from Broadway hits will create one or 2 new songs so they have a chance at best song. They did that with Evita (it one best original song) and Chicago (I don't think it won but it had several songs nominated (that was the year that an Eminem song won).

16. To be fair
they didn't do the Enchanted songs justice. At all.

The first one..."Happy Working Song" is only cute if you know what's going on in the scene. It's a total mockery of Snow White and it's hilarious.

The second one is a great song, but instead of having Amy Adams sing it like she did in the movie, they had Kristin Chenoweth sing it. Why is beyond me...she completely butchered it.

The third song, well, ok, they did do that one justice. Although hiring actors to play the two lead characters while Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey were both in attendance is ridiculous, imo.

17. Why Amy Adams didn't do the second song
The first song Amy just had to stand there and sing and you're right - it sucked without all the rodents & other pets clamoring around her doing housework.

I'm thinking for the 2nd song, it required much more work than the first one since they had a whole dance routine for it. Kristin Chenoweth is a seasoned, tony-winning broadway actress. She's use to performing song & dance numbers live and made better sense to be used in the Oscars. Sure, Amy danced in the movie, but they probably did dozens of retakes in order to make that scene look seamless.

18. Possibly
but then Kristen should have sung the flippin' song the way it was performed in the movie.

Also, they could have done it like they did the other Enchanted song, with Amy singing and everything else going on around her.

19. Huskerlaw nails it.
I loved "Enchanted"; it was a family movie that the whole family could actually enjoy.

And I know I'm in the minority, but I couldn't stand the song that won.

21. My kids saw and enjoyed Enchanted, but they said the music shouldn't have been nominated
because out of the context of the movie the songs were blah.

That's their opinions anyway.

28. "Little Wonders" was not written for "Meet the Robinsons"
It was from Rob Thomas's already completed CD, and then was used in the movie.

Rufus Wainwright could have been nominated, however.

25. I agree. People are missing the point of the "Enchanted" songs.
They are supposed to be a parody of the typical "Disney Princess" songs. On that level, they worked perfectly. (Although I still think that the right song won.)
