But I really liked "Alien Nation". And yeah, I know they did some follow up movies (good because the last episode was a cliff hanger) but they weren't quite on par with the series, I thought.

5. The B5 spinoff Crusade.
Alternately not incredibly good and extremely intriguing, it followed an arc I'd wished to be fully explored. It was ended because of resistance to extreme intrusion on the part of the host network, TNT.

12. Actually, I did find it excellent and intriguing :)
I loved Babylon 5, too, but thought Crusade was just getting into their season and all when TNT pulled the plug. Although it seems like it was Straczynksi (sp) that did it to get away from TNT, or something like that because of their messing with everything.

Of course, unlike the majority fo the B5 fans, I loved the new score and sound track. I felt Even Chen added the kind of "edge" the show needed. I know I read one fan's diatribe that sci-fi music had to be orchestral and sweeping and all that. I guess they have never seen Forbidden Planet ;)

15. Joe released the unproduced season 1 scripts, did you get to see them?
The cliffhanger has a government agent attempting to assassinate Cole. Who do you serve? made all the more intriguing by the human research into Shadow tech, and the building Telepath war.

Joe once said that if Galen knew that Cole had an Apocalypse Box, that he'd freak out and flee. I wanted to know more :(

10. Stargate SG-1
One of the top rated shows on Sci-fi. Was renewed for a 10th season, but got no promotion leading up to and during the 10th season. A few episodes in, Sci-fi announced that they wouldn't be renewing it for an 11th and sued MGM to keep them from taking it to a different network.

14. I didn't know they had sued MGM.
Then again, that's SciFi Channel. They love to spoil the next week's show of Stargate: Atlantis, too. Not sure why they think that's a good thing...

We need a sci-fi channel operated by the creators of these great shows instead of the corporate suits! :D

17. Now that you mention it
It looks like they didn't. Their contract with MGM had some funky provision forbidding MGM from taking the series elsewhere.

As for Sci-Fi, it looks like they simply wanted to cancel the show and they're first class liars.

The cancellation "was not a ratings-driven decision," said Mark Stern, exec VP of original programming for the Sci Fi Channel.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117948764.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

Stern cited several factors behind Sci Fi’s decision to close the gate on another season. “The ratings have softened,” he said.

37. I respectfully disagree (about the first part--the second is dead on).
Season 9 was pretty disappointing though it had some good episodes. Season 10 started to get back to the same quality as the earlier seasons.

If season 8 had been the end of the series, that would have been great.

"They could go fishing."
"Fishing?"
"Yeah, I'd be the perfect ending. I mean, after that, anything else would seem pointless."

79. The problem quite simply was that it had been going for 10 years.
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 11:31 PM by DarkTirade
The only way they managed to 'stay fresh' in any way is by bringing in a whole new enemy and doing a lot of other things that changed it completely. Which is good, because if it had stayed the same it would have gotten old years ago. But on the other hand... it can only change so much before it's no longer recognizable as Stargate.

That being said, I didn't have cable for a while so I missed most of seasons 7-9. :P So when I jumped back in at the end of 9/beginning of 10, I was a wee bit lost.

You won't want to be waiting in between disk's. You might very well spread out the last disk because you know it'll be over soon, and you'll be dreading that by then.

When you are done, then watch Serenity. I saved the movie for last and was glad I did!

The way Sci-Fi treated MST3k was terrible, from that stupid content ban to covering up Crow's head in the theater with the damn logo. Yeah they reversed both of those decisions but I think it's indicitive of their general lack of respect for the show and its fans.

Sci-Fi Channel's management just completely sucks and has since the network's inception. It's run by bean counters. They LOVE pulling that crap where they'll move a show around so it can't find an audience and then they'll kill it. :(

Usually, the shows I don't like stay around forever and the ones I love get canceled mid-season. Most of my favourites are mentioned above: Stargate, Firefly, Crusade. I was crushed when Dr Who got canceled years ago, but thankfully they revived it (and better).

31. Not really sci-fi, but "Millenium" had just started to go interesting places.
What had been a simple, but stylish profiler-solves-the-crime-of-the-week series started getting into angels, demons, the anti-Christ and the like.

It really peaked at the end of it's second season.

Then the writers must have received notice from Fox it was cancelling and to wrap up the various story lines.

After that, it just kind of fizzled out.

The show featured Terry O'Quinn playing a pre-"Lost", John Locke like mystery man.

with no good-guy/bad-guy dichotomy. But then once Boone was killed off, and the Boone-Da'an relationship was destroyed, Zo'or became the bad-guy "heavy" and it just became another space cowboy drama. Too bad. Such potential!

62. But... but... Condi said that no one ever thought of flying planes into the WTC!
I have the boxed set and the commentary track is very somber regarding the unfortunately prophetic plot.

The purpose of the scheme to crash a plane into the WTC was to blame terrorists so that we would have an excuse to have a war which would benefit military contractors. The plotters appear to be a company that has developed a remote flying technology (which is used to take control of the 747 in order to make it crash).

There was a company working on this technology, but sadly, most of its engineering team died when their plane wash crash-landed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 (I'm not making this up). I'm sure this has been discuss at length in the 911 forum.

Awesome show and with a uniformly excellent cast.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165564/

"Ezekiel Stone, a former cop, killed his wife's rapist and was later killed himself. He is sent to Hell for his crime. However, 113 evil souls have escaped, and the Devil sends him back to Earth to recover them. Both Stone and the escaped souls can only be harmed or killed by each other, and they can be sent back to Hell if their eyes (the "windows to the soul") are destroyed. If Stone can recover all 113, then he'll be given a second chance at life...or so the Devil says."

Decent quality.

Edit: Lol, Peter Woodward (Galen from B5's universe) guest stars in that youtube vid as the priest in the confessional

61. *** B5 fans: NEW EPISODES
JMS and crew have produced some straight-to-DVD episodes. They're pretty good (the budget is obviously low). They also suffer from the unfortunate passings of Richard Biggs (Dr. Franklin) and Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar).

A two-episode DVD is available at Amazon.com here: http://www.amazon.com/Babylon-5-Tales-Bruce-Boxleitner/dp/B000PHX8RA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1204127330&sr=8-1

Definitely better than "Crusade." There's also lots of improved CGI so the space shots are quite nice — a requirement as it cuts waaaay down on sets (again, low budget).

67. Thanks - I may have to look into that.
:hi: My dad's a big B5 fan, too (in fact, I'm pretty sure that's how I got into it), and his birthday's coming up... :D :toast:

73. A buddy of mine was a B5 extra
But his biggest contribution to the show was that, for five seasons, he provided the show with the photographic art seen in various crew quarters.

He was also an extra in the episode, Wheel of Fire and wrote an article about his adventure.

His interview in "5 Times."

68. Special Unit 2.
Funny urban sci-fi/fantasy (the line got blurry at times) that didn't take itself seriously at ALL, yet still managed to be a better-than-average show.

Had some interesting twists on mythology: Soul-stealing mermen, a mummy resurrected by lightning, werewolves that moved fast enough to only be a blur, medusae/gorgons where the snakebites would turn people to stone, plenty more.

Not always perfect but I suspect it only got canceled (by UPN) because it didn't have vampires. Dismissed the idea in the first episode.

71. I liked "The Dresden Files" - kinda a mix of sci-fi and metaphysical
stuff, but enjoyable and different from the standard fare on SciFi.

I have no idea why the SciFi channel canceled it.

77. I loved me some Alien Nation
It was cancelled, probably because it was too freaky or something.

78. Farscape and Strange World.
Farscape at least got a decent ending but poor Strange World got all of three episodes aired before ABC shelved it for two years and then finally the Sci-Fi Channel grabbed it and ran all 13 episodes. It was like the X-Files, except everything was based on real science, not alien invasions and government conspiracies. *sigh*

80. Anyone remember "Hard Time on Planet Earth"?
It barely lasted a season, 1989. I enjoyed the show. A guy from another planet was being punished for a crime he committed on his planet by being sent to earth, accompanied by a robot that floated around in the air. Some funny stuff in it, like when he got a job shoveling shit and the robot performed an analysis and concluded that it must be a very valuable substance and they must really trust him to let him handle it.
