I am wondering if I am strange...kind of long
Well, yes, I know I am strange, but hear me out.

I have been struggling with this shoulder injury since the wild fires and the trips up the ladder to water the eaves and the roof. It was fairly minor at first but has been progressively getting more painful so I finally went and got it looked at and have started therapy.

The whole time I had this pain, I kept telling myself "mind over matter" and "the pain is just in your head". Seriously. I think it is probably a midwestern/scandahoovian trait, because my mom (who is mostly Swedish) does the same thing. Because of this, I sometimes ignore things longer than is healthy.

I talked to my mom earlier today and told her about my mental dialog about the pain being in my head. And a wave of both relief and sadness washed over me. Relief that the pain is not in my head, and sadness that I had believed that voice that told me it was all in my head, and that I could have taken care of this sooner.

Am I unusual?

1. Am I unusual? -- NO
I spent 2 years thinking being paralyzed was all psychological and if I would just snap out of it I would quit being such a freakin burden on my family. (I was in a car accident)

My sister is obese, morbidly obese. She tells herself the only reason her abdomen hurts is because she's fat - why bother with a doctor? If she'd just get off her lazy butt and lose weight her abdomen would not hurt like that. -- We finally brow beat her into dragging her abdomen to the doctor - she had uterine cancer.

No you are not unusual.

3. My dear KitchenWitch!
You are not unusual, by any stretch!

I think it's extremely normal for us to try to minimize any possible injury/illness...

We just want to get on with our lives...

I'm so glad you got some help for this...

4. Me too.
I know it is going to be hard work to break this particular pain cycle, but I know it will be broken.

I'm just gonna note that when KitchenWitch says "Kind of long," it means more than one paragraph. :D

17. Perked me right up, too
Dodgers - Cubs Thursday at 10:05 a.m. on 176, Dodgers-Rangers Friday at noon:05 on 179. (I think the second one's a mistake; the Dodgers schedule has them playing Atlanta again Friday.)

There's games tomorrow, too — Reds-Phillies, Mets-Tigers, Rox-Sox.

BASEBALL'S BACK!!!

6. I had a doctor tell me that all pain is
in your head. That is because that is where you nerve endings are sending their signals telling your brain they something is damaged and hurt so please get off your butt and get it checked.
You sound very normal to me.

7. I Do The Same Thing
But that is because I belong to an HMO that I dread going to. And even when I do drag myself, I often wonder why I bothered.

13. Yep!
Glad to know I am not the only one that feels that way. And it is a non-profit insurance company. I can only imagine how bad the for profits are.

15. To which one?
Actually, I am stuck with KP for a while because they agreed to cover my son for a serious dog bite injury for as long as he is on my insurance. They actually have treated him very well.

16. Blue Shield
Funny thing is, our copays for stuff have reduced since the switch, and the wait times to see a specialist are MUCH shorter.

19. But Didn't They Just Get In Trouble For Dropping People
when they got sick? Not really a problem for us since we are covered by work but I think it was Blue Shield that just got into trouble.

Getting to see anyone at KP is a hassle. I have only gotten to see my doctor once since he was assigned to me 15 years ago because he was always booked when I needed an appointment. Can't even imagine trying to get an appointment with a specialist.

20. I had not heard that about Blue Shield
I think almost all of the insurance companies have been under fire for rescinding policies though.

21. I Was Wrong, It Was Health Net
Fined 9 million for canceling a breast cancer patient. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory?id=4334008

Thanks for the information. I'll keep Blue Shield in mind when I am able to change companies.

Interesting how you knew what company I was talking about just by my wondering why I went at all statement. LOL

10. I've been having pains in my lower back for eight days now...
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 01:54 AM by Fox Mulder
and I keep thinking it'll go away if I ignore it. I fear it may be my kidneys causing the pain. I should probably go to the doctor (it's easier said than done considering I don't have any health insurance) and worry about the bill later.

18. Unusual? No, not at all.
I totally do the same thing. My whole family's the same way. (Okay, not my mom. She's a big fan of going to the doc, but she's a former state employee.) We're a buncha New England yankees, though. No doctors, please. We'll just die here in the living room, thanks.

Perfect example: I've had reflux as long as I can remember. Started carrying Tums in my pocket when I was 12. Well, heck, big deal, everyone needs TUMS, right? So, when my husband finally convinced me that constant pain and being unable to sleep through the night wasn't normal, I went to the doctor.

WHEN I WAS 32.

x( :dunce:

Christ, I'm an idiot. (And I live nearly pain-free now, though I do have to have annual biopsies as a result of my foolishness.)

23. When I Was Seven, I Let An Earache Go So Long
before even telling my parents (of course, in the middle of the night making it an emergency visit) that even though the Doctor took my Father in the other room I could still hear him yelling at my Father for waiting so long to bring me in.

Of course, I think I got that from Dad anyway so I suppose, in a way, it was his fault lol
