Top 5 favorite rock groups?
I was listening to radio in the lab and they played two of my favorites in a row and it got me to thinking. So here are mine:
1) Queen
2) Eagles
3) Rolling Stones
4) The Who
5) Foreigner

Yes, I know, I have umm outdated taste, but I grew up listening to this (and Led Zepplin just misses..my mother loves them and I heard it a bunch)
temeah and DuStrange: Yes, I realize no Spinal Tap, Sacriledge!

:hide:

35. My all timers.....
1. The Grateful Dead (saw them over 500 times)always different. Never even close to the same show. The more you knew about the band and the music the more there was to know.

2.String Cheese Incident. Even more different every night than the Dead were. Very melodic, the rhythm guitar player is stupendous, the only acoustic guitar player than led the jams. Every time they played a song it would have a different jam, lead to different segue. This band combined the most styles into their music. Bluegrass, Calypso, Musique Concrete, jazz, funk, rock and roll, country, techno, calypso, reggae and any thing else. Every night they played, they averaged a song they would only play this one time in their career, a song they would only play once a year, and one they would only play once on the tour.

They covered so many songs too. New Years eve and Halloween shows had themes with the entire venue and the music along the lines of theme. The "dead Rockstars set" is legendary on halloween 03. The Time travelers ball on NYE 03 is too with nothing but songs about time. "Time Warp"

3. Leftover Salmon. Nobody does straight up Americana better than Leftover Salmon. at one time the funniest, partyingst band ever on the planet. Now that founding member and banjoist Mark Vann died, they do not have quite the humor, but still flat kick your ass musically. fun guys too.

The song "Hey, Woody Guthrie Where Are You" is something everyone should listen to.

4. Bruce Springsteen and the E St band. At one time, this was the best band on the planet not named the Grateful Dead. They are still pretty damn good, but the shows are A LOT shorter now and the music is a lot tighter.

5. Phish. Not for everyone but I found their music very complex. The guitar player is one of the all time great ones. Different every night. even though they got compared to the grateful dead a lot, they were more like Zappa as far as the music went. very hard to grasp without being in the same groove as the band. They could really make the magic happen every night. Another one of those bands that takes chances. That either leads to a some great moments or horrifying train wrecks. Mostly with Phish it was transcendent moments.

6. The Radiators. New Orleans finest. Fishhead music! These guys just flat kill it. They play every song like it is the very last song they are ever going to play. A great guitar player too. Every night is like a trip through the history of American Rock and Roll.

58. Jay-Z is universal.
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 01:34 PM by janesez
Jay-Z doesn't need to fit into categories. He is HOV.

EDITED TO ADD: You didn't mention Prince or Stevie Wonder, both of whom you could argue make R&B, rather than rock music. Except that all these distinctions are arbitrary and ultimately meaningless, because music is music and a lot of what Prince recorded could be considered more "rock" than whiny motherfuckers like, say, Radiohead, who like to record their own lifeless masturbation, so really, who's to say what is rock and what isn't?

69. Do yourself a favour and read Joe Carducci's "Rock and the Pop Narcotic"
There is an aesthetic that is "rock" and rap/hip-hop is not within that aesthetic for the most part. That is by no means a knock on hip-hop, I'm one of the biggest hip-hop fans on the site. They're just not the same. There ARE distinctions between genres in music based on aesthetic, whether you like it are not.

74. I disagree.

I ran a record store for a decade. My whole life is about music. I understand you think you know more about music than most people, and you probably do, but I'm not one of those people. So please don't tell me to "do myself a favor" about anything, because I saw Black Flag at the old 9:30 Club in DC when I was 13 and you weren't even born so I feel pretty comfortable with the SST "aesthetic".

Some hip hop songs sure as hell do fall into the rock "aesthetic". Outkast "Ghetto Music", Eminem "Lose Yourself", lots of early Beastie Boys, and as for Jay-Z, "Oh My God", "Lucifer", "My 1st Song", not to mention the crossover stuff he's done with Linkin Park and others, all fall into a category that is easily broadly defined as rock.

82. Thanks for the condescension.
I'm not pulling the "I know more about music than you do" card, I'm recommending a really good book that establishes a very strong aesthetic for rock music.

And of course Beastie Boys were originally a punk band. I'm not saying that hip-hop artists don't display any rock influence, and there are plenty of artists who can span genres, of course, but on the whole, Jay-Z is not a rock artist.

84. Hey, you started it...
The combo punch of "do yourself a favor" and "whether you like it or not" came off pretty condescending to me. However, I'm willing to take your word that you didn't mean it like that so let's say peace on that subject.

I'll check out the book, 'tho SST (and other labels like early days Subpop) had a real punker-than-thou thing going on that irritated me. Joe Carducci was responsible for some good music though, so perhaps there is wisdom there.

I still disagree about Hov - I think he, along with Outkast (and producers like RZA), are bringing some of the most innovative music of any genre, and spanning several, directly to the mainstream. Jay-Z is this generation's Dylan, and it wouldn't surprise me if he put out a rock album, a country album, a classical album, or anything in between.

85. I'm not saying Jay-Z isn't innovative or anything...
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 02:45 PM by primate1
I'm just saying his primary output isn't rock.

I say "do yourself a favour" to everyone for friendly recommendations. As for "whether you like it or not" I stand by that because there really are aesthetic distincions between types of music no matter what anyone says. Classical is not rock, rock is not hip-hop, hip-hop is not country. A lot of artists span genres, like I said, but I don't think Jay-Z, overall, is really one of those artists, even if he has a few songs that might.

63. The Beatles, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, CSNY & CSN and REM.
REM is from my town of Athens, GA which has more great musicians per capita than anywhere I know!

I grew up in the South and I love the Allman Brothers, Sea Level (Randall Bramblett and Davis Causey)and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I also like the Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Doobie Brothers, The Ramones, Squeeze and Nirvana.

I really would love to come to the meetup, but right now it's looking like that's not going to happen. I'm so burnt out from exams, being sick, etc., that I will probably be a walking zombie for the first part of break, and my mom's taking off work to hang out with me so I want to spend some time with her as well. We'll see how things go, though, and if anything changes I'll be sure to let you know!

Well, two actually.

First, perhaps mixing the Tap with mere mortals is improper. It's such a fine line between honor and sacrilege.

Second, maybe five is too limiting. Perhaps the list should go to...say, eleven?
