Baseball fans! Who's your team?
Do we have every team represented here on DU? Why are they your team? Chances in 08?

1. Yankees
They are my team because Thurman Munson is one of my heroes.

They may get the wildcard again this year. Depends on young pitchers and Arod.

I'd say the Tribe can make it to the playoffs in the Wildcard. Detroit will be quite good this year. Boston will be tough again. Spring training is here!

4. Los Gigantes!
No Bonds this year. Wonder how things are gonna work out without the big bopper in the lineup... Great young pitching but no big bat.

But they have been my team forever. used to go the Stick and watch Willie, mcCovey, Cepeda and all of them play.

I've lived in NYC 19 years...they're my home team now.

But regardless, I'm psyched to see anybody playing ball again. Investigations and soap-operas and cities' rivalries be damned...it's a great game.

The Boston Red Sox. They are my team because...okay, you're all going to laugh...I was infatuated with Mo Vaughn and Roger Clemens when I was a kid. Chances in '08...better than Mike Huckabee's. Okay, that's not much of a wager. Chances that the Red Sox win the World Series 10 more times before the Yankees win another one. 100%.

Actually, I have a confession to make. I actually root for two teams: the Boston Red Sox and whomever is playing the Yankees.

*sigh*

They are my team because I lived in Baltimore when I first became interested in baseball. The very first major league game I ever went to was at Camden Yards the first year it opened. That was pretty much it for me.

They've done not so well the last several years. I'm waiting for a good team again like they had in the late 90s.

82. I'm gonna tell this story yet again
for like the kajillionth time. But it's one of my favorites.

In the mid-'80s, I did photography for the local Class A ball club (Mariners' affiliate). One day, the Bakersfield Dodgers were in town, and I was in the press box a couple of hours before the game, talking with my friend Buddy, the PA announcer. The Dodgers were on the field, doing their running and stretching and whatnot, and I looked into their dugout — and there, all alone, stood a gray-haired Sandy Koufax. (For two or three years, he was the Dodgers' roving minor-league pitching instructor.)

I stood there saying something like "Abbadabbadabbadabbadabba..."

Buddy, who was wonderfully gregarious and knew about everybody in the California League, said, "Go talk to him. He's a nice guy; I talked to him."

I couldn't do it.

A few years later, recounting the episode in a newspaper column, I wrote, "It would've been like an altar boy being granted an audience with the Pope."

89. What a memory!
Remains in the heart forever. I just revel in the way oldtime baseball makes me feel good.

With all the animosity and strife and way too big money, and not much team loyalty from the players (or player loyalty from the owners, it goes both ways) I wonder if today's youths are being fulfilled with the same kind of feelings and memories. Be a real shame is they aren't.

I've been a Giants fan from the moment I heard the news on the radio, "The Giants are coming to town".

Oeditpus Rex, I look forward to another baseball season, and reading your insights and thoughts on the game. Were you a baseball scout in a previous life?

I also enjoy our friendly rivalry immensely.

78. It wouldn't have been as much fun all these years
without the along 101 — and between rooms in my house; my dad was a Giants fan. :D

I never really had the hate, though — well, wait. There was that one time at the end of the '71 regular season, when the Giants won the NL West by one game over the Dodgers, and in the post-game interview on KTVU, Dick Dietz blurted out, "DODGERS CAN GO TO HELL!" I seriously wanted to crawl through the teevee and strangle him.

Ironically, two years later, Dietz was a Dodger.

(He was also involved in one of the weirdest things I ever saw on a ball field, and of course it happened in a Giants-Dodgers game. It was in '68, when Drysdale was going after the record for consecutive scoreless innings. The Giants loaded the bases late in a game, Dietz came up and Drysdale hit him, but the plate ump — Harry Wendlestedt — said Dietz didn't try to get out of the way. There was a huge fuss, of course, but the ruling stood, Dietz popped up and Drysdale got out of the inning and went on to get the record.)

And I am a Twins fan. I guess I resent the press he has gotten via the Moneyball thing. He was not the only GM that had a lot of success with a low payroll. I always felt that Terry Ryan of the Twins never got credit for how "efficient" moneywise his payrolls were.

All gone. Why even bother watching anymore? x(

I began hating him when he traded away Eric Byrnes, for no apparent reason except that he seemed to resent Byrnes' status as a fan favorite. That one broke my heart, too.

The Moneyball thing gets a lot of lip service, but has he won a series yet with his method? NO. Totally overrated.

Beane came OUT and that is very rare in sports that anyone is out and still actively involved with a team.

Most athletes that come out, are retired and have no links with any teams any more.

At this point (45 years old) I'd just like to see the Rangers play in the World Series, never mind winning it all.

Have you ever read "Seasons in Hell" by Mike Shropshire?

Forget sports, it's one of the funniest books of ANY genre I've ever read.

If you were around for the historical clusterfuck that was the 70's Rangers, it's only icing on the cake of sorrow.

I've only been living in Tx for 20 years, so didn't become a Rangers fan until the late 80s. I missed the frustration of the 70s, which I guess I should be thankful for.

45. Twins...
They got rid of an all-star center fielder and the best pitcher on the planet for a bag of balls and 6 packets of GIANT sunflower seeds.

My guess is that they may struggle. I think they'll cover the Royals and .500 would be a success.

In that order. I'm pretty much a generic baseball fan. If it's baseball, I like it. I haven't the energy to get specific about players and stuff. I just like it, sorta like background music.

The Cleveland Indians. I'm a native Buckeye, so I've gotta represent! They came oh-so-close last year, and I think they will only build on that this season. Go Tribe!

For the record, my NL team is the Cubs. I lived in Chicago for 7 years, and am married to a die-hard Cubs fan.

Looks OK for this year if, as always, the pitching holds.

A lineup tailor-made for the bandbox in South Philly. Power, speed and very good defense.

Everybody hits! Woohoo! :D

Dear Brad Lidge, get healthy and stay there.

94-68 is possible.

for one reason -- Bob Uecker! I love his broadcasts (yes, I know -- he bats for the other side, politically). Today, as I've done for the past 2 seasons, I spent the $15 so I could listen live to every other MLB broadcast.

I grew up liking the Orioles and the A's. I hate the Yankees worse than Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Miller, combined.

Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 12:39 AM by abq e streeter
I know, this is unheard of in Chicago, but I always figured that both teams are "Chicago' and neither hardly ever win anything,so only rooting for one and thereby cutting already slim odds in half was just mathematically unsound. But I also can root for a team who's play I admire such as last year's Rockies, and have in fact been to more Rockies games in person than Cubs and Sox combined in last several years...As far as why the Cubs are my team, I was born into it; never had a choice. Allegedly they're supposed to have a real shot this season; but a true Cub fan is a pessimist deep down.

I live in SoCal and have season tix to the Angels, my second-favorite team, but you can see who my favorite team of all is.....(I'm from Queens).

They play each other in June, so I'll be mighty conflicted.

However, there is ONE team I hate more than any other team in all of sports:

YANKEES SUCK!!!!
