I'm going to tell you EXACTLY how this shit happens, and I need everyone's help to get it to stop.
Some moran at corporate headquarters paid a research firm a lot of money to find out that customers don't like people saying no to them. He then published an edict: an associate must have approval from a manager to say no to a customer.
My wife is now a Home Depot head cashier, and she tells me stories about returns that would be funny if they weren't criminal, like the guy who returned his Christmas tree because "I don't like it." Which, of course, we might have actually accepted as a valid reason for return if he wouldn't have brought it back on December 27 with the lights still on it. Or the moran who told us he "didn't need" the concrete he was returning. To make this one more believable, you should leave the concrete in the bags. One guy said he overbought lumber. True. He bought 16-foot lumber, sawed eight feet off it and brought back the ends that had the price tags.
But here's the King of the Morans. This is the funniest Home Depot war story I have told this year. This candidate for retail immortality presented with three carts of interior doors, and all of them came from Lowe's. They have Lowe's SKU on them, they have Lowe's brand name and they have, written in little letters, the word "LOWES" on the price tag. Most people can basically figure out that the doors don't come from Home Depot, right? So I get called up to returns for a go-no go determination, see the Lowe's tag on them and, after calling a manager, refuse the return. I'm wearing a Home Depot apron. The cashier is, and so is the manager. The customer decided he'd bought the doors from us, so he started screaming. "God Dammit this is Lowe's and I want to speak to a manager right now, I'm going to get you all fired." Right now I'm pissed at this fuckhead, so I pointed at the middle of my apron, where the eight-inch-wide "Home Depot" logo was, and asked him if he knew what it said.
