Computer went all wonky today.
Shit, I don't need this. Woke up late this morning and didn't have time to get on my computer at all. As far as I know, everything was normal. Mrs. Kazak confirms that everything was working fine when she first got on it this morning. Went to work and mid-morning got an email from Mrs. Kazak saying it looked like my mouse had died. She was receiving an error message saying the usb device was malfunctioning and to reconnect it and if it still doesn't work to replace it. So, all day we're thinking dead mouse, no big deal, new mouse, problem solved, right? Wrong. When I get home, the first thing I do is plug in the iPod, error message, usb device is malfunctioning, etc. So, now we're thinking there's some problem with all the usb ports on the computer, it's not taking any usb input. Then, oddly, after rebooting, after doing the same thing numerous times already, the old mouse mysteriously all of the sudden works again. Ipod returns the same error message, and no worky. Computer manufacturer wants $60.00 for thirty minutes of tech support. Uhm, help?

1. Reinstall iTunes for a start
Then look at your computer manufacturer's website for USB drivers. If worse comes to worse, then backup your files and just do a complete reinstall back to factory settings from the CDs.

2. Reinstall iTunes, really? Haven't tried that.
I either can't seem to, or don't need to update USB device drivers. Windows says it "could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed".

3. Yup. Reinstall the USB drivers. Also, blow the dust out.
Dusty computers are hot computers. Hot computers don't work right.

4. I believe my USB device driver is the one that says "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller"

How would I reinstall the USB drivers? Beyond right clicking and choosing "update drivers" which hasn't worked. (BTW, if I come off snarky, I don't mean to at all, I appreciate any help!)

5. Ok.
Download this product and run in to get the full details of your mainboard (the motherboards manufacturer and model).
Then go to the manufacturers web site, find the downloads section and search for your motherboard. Once you find it you need to look for the USB drivers. Download and install them. It should work. It just might take a bit of searching to find the drivers on the manufacturers web site.

If you have trouble, post back here with the mainboard information.

:hi:

6. I did what you said...

Cupid says the mainboard is a "First International Computer, Inc." and the model is "K2BC5G/PV". I go to their website, they have a list of mainboards, but my model is not listed. :(

8. Your motherboard vendor (First Internation Computers) ...
appears to offer the drivers here:
ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/driver/1stUtilities_v1.292/v1292.iso

It's a CD ISO though, so you'll need to burn it to cd to use it.

If this seems all a bit much, sometimes reinstalling the OS from scratch is easiest (being sure to format the HD). Just be sure to back up files you want to keep.

9. Eek!
I don't want to have to format and restore if I can help it. I intend to try everything I can before I have to take that step! Thanks for the link, I'll try that tonight when I get home.

10. Actually, from reading others who've had the same problem...
Restoring the computer doesn't seem to fix the problem. I still haven't had a chance to try your link, I'll let you know what happens when I do...
