"Herzog understood that true horror is based on recognizable human obsessions and flaws."
A good quote regarding one of my favorites, Herzog's 1979 remake of "Nosferatu" starring Klaus Kinski. Count Dracula is creepy, loathsome, and pitiful. Any other fans here of this timeless work, or similar bits? The music of this film is gorgeous, but the soundtracks are incomplete, most significantly regarding the Georgian vocal piece "tsintsharo" or some such.

(There are a couple of clips on youtube, but they are so lo-fi that far, far too much detail is lost for them to be even remotely representative of the actual accomplishment involved.)

1. I put it on my list
I have a list to order when I can spend money. I love Nosferatu even though other vampires seem cheesy sometimes. two Halloweens ago I saw the Virginia symphony playing to a showing of the first one! I didn't even know about this newer movie.

4. There are two versions, one with spoken English, the other in German with subtitles.
I think that they both come on the DVD. The German version is better, although the translation isn't perfectly accurate.

2. i'll have to check that out
here is what my textbook has to say about horror:

Five Tenets of Horror:

1. Helplessness
2. Isolation
3. Alienation
4. Contrast
5. Ignorance

For example in Stoker's Dracula:

1. The characters feel overwhelmed by an ancient evil that is significantly more powerful than themselves.
2. J Harker, in the beginning of the novel, is completely isolated in the Count's castle, and totally subject to his whims.
3. None of the characters can reveal anything of their plight to the authorities, lest they be considered madmen, criminals or insane.
4. Lucy Westenra was innocent and beautiful in life, and ate babies in undeath.
5. None of the characters, save Van Helsing, knew that they could possibly combat the Count.

3. Your descriptions defining "horror" are extremely similar to the Bush Regime.
-The definitely foment negativity that people feel is more powerful than themselves.

-We are isolated in America, where the terriss' can hit us at any moment. And Bush can wiretap us at any moment. We have no recourse or checks and balances. We are subject to his whims. His smirk tells us so.

-We have told our plight to the authorities (the 2006 Democratic Congress) and they have revealed themselves to effectively be Bushs' slaves. Check their necks for bite marks? ;)

-Hmm, no beautiful and innocent stuff in BushCo...but eating babies? Considering Abu Ghraib etc., how much of a reach would it be...?

-None of the Congressmen could possibly combat Bush, except for Dennis Kucinich, and look where it's getting him.

If you tolerate these behaviours within yourself, you must accept it from BushCo. Don't act how you wouldn't want to be treated. I know, I know, "crazy talk"...there's no room for such things in this brave new age.
