1. When I worked at Wal-Mart, at least half the "globes" in the ceiling were empty...
they had no cameras in them. Of the ones that did have cameras, the "globes" weren't fully utilized, the cameras only swiveled vertically, not horizontally. The only places that had guaranteed camera coverage was Electronics, Jewelry, the front cash registers(flat panels, looking straight down on the registers), and last but not least, the Sporting Goods Counter(where the guns were sold). Also, another thing, I've seen the room where the cameras are supposed to be monitored, 9 times out of ten, it was unoccupied, and the VCRs weren't on.

Those globes serve a purpose of trying to scare shop lifters, not to actually catch them, its more cost effective that way. Hell, it wasn't until a few years ago that the store I worked at finally installed security scanners at all the entrances, and even there they fucked up, they put one OUTSIDE, at the exit from lawn and garden, the fenced in area. Some of my friends that still worked there at the time would say that that one would go off all day and night, so much so they disconnected it, those things aren't designed to withstand weather, so false alarms were common on that one.

Oh, and the outdoor cameras, for the parking lot, were so poor at image resolution you could barely tell there were cars in the lot, or even if it was day or night.

2. when I worked there, I was brought into the loss prevention office to fiddle around with the cameras
it was controlled by this joystick type of thing that you could move the cameras around and focus on somebody and watch them from anywhere in the store....you could zoom in, pull out, do all sorts of crazy stuff.

Most of the time I think the security guys were just checking out hot chicks, though. Most theives tended to be people who worked there and people who were caught by associates on the floor.

Just a wall full of VCRs and monitors, most of which were off. Of course, ours is an older store that has only recently(after I worked there) gone through a remodel. I worked there from 1998 to 2000. I agree on the hot chicks part, I was "recruited" by our single loss prevention officer to walk the floor. I was working lawn and garden, and was able to wear blue jeans and a regular shirt, so he though I was ideal. Take off the name tag, and I'm just another customer.

I've also been recruited to chase after a guy who stole a bunch of clothes and ran out of the store, actually, all of us L+G guys hopped into a car and chased after the guy. It was nuts, we also participated in a couple of "Code 500" incidents, if I remember right, that was the code for all male associates to go to the front of the store, usually to stave off or stop a violent altercation. I remember one year pulling a couple of women away from each other because they were fighting over the last furby being sold at our store a few days before Christmas. I got scratched pretty badly from that fight.

ON EDIT: When you worked there, did you have a bar code price sticker stuck to the back of your name tag to be used to clock in and out for your shifts? If you did, did you ever scan it on a Telxon? When I did, the UPC code was my SS# and I was worth 1 cent. :)

5. yeah, i had the barcode
and the store i worked at was built in 2005. So it had just a few video terminals, but you could switch to like, any of 100 or so cameras.
