KELSO, Wash. -- A driver swerved around work crews at a closed bridge and plunged into Salmon Creek on Thursday morning.

Scot Calderon walked away from the crash after rescue teams struggled to bring him up the 50-foot embankment near the Klineline Bridge.

Calderon said his dog, Taco, became trapped beneath the brake pedal as he approached the north side of the bridge.

“I tried to kick him loose and when I did, I hit the gas pedal and boom!” he said.
