There is a woman in my office who is about 40 and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Six weeks ago she was operated on and had everything removed. She came back to work this week. Yesterday afternoon she was in my office and told me this story:
Last Friday we had a nasty snow storm. She was driving on Route 12 in Swanzey NH behind a truck. The truck hit a patch of ice, went sideways across the road, hit the guardrail and went over on its side...the driver's side. This woman pulled over, called 911 and ran to the truck. She smelled gas leaking so she climbed up on the truck got the passenger's side door open, pulled out an unconscious 12 year old girl and then pulled out the girl's father. The got these people into her car and then went back and directed traffic until the police and EMT's came.
This is six weeks after major surgery. Her response to my expressions of amazement was:"I feel so lucky to be alive, I was glad I could help someone else."
You wonder, sometimes, where people get their strength and whether you could find it in similar circumstances.
