Computer rant: Dells are total pieces of SHIT
even the MOUSE PAD cracked in half ( no, I'm not kidding ) and it doesn't appear to be dry-rotted.

The hard drive is split apart in two corners ( who assembles these things...fucking 5th graders? )

It's constantly making a loud buzzing noise, and it's doing it when I'm NOT downloading anything.

I'm about to pick this thing up and throw it out the window...crap,crap,crap

Oh, their tech support sucks ass, too. Just thought I'd throw that in there

Who else has the misfortune of owning one of these shit-boxes? I sure hope you're not paying on it, still ( like I was until four months ago )

1. I've had great experiences with their machines.
Their tech support is well-known for the ass-sucking. Thankfully, I never need them.

We've used hundreds of Dells at work with very few problems.

5. Desktop....big, clunky, piece-of-shit desktop
and I know it's a dinosaur, but I pretty much keep it around for e-mail ( sometimes, I'm surprised it's capable of doing that task )

4. Their desktops are usually pretty good. The laptops suck.
Never again will I buy a Dell laptop. I've reinstalled Windows TWICE on this POS.

6. I've worked on many computers ( when I say worked, I don't mean doing
technical stuff, but just using them ) and it seems like everything from the mouse to the speakers is so cheaply built. Things are breaking off everywhere like knobs, key covers. I have taken good care of this thing, too and haven't been knocking it around anywhere. I know I have never dropped it.

7. Gods yes...
their laptops are notoriously shitty. I had one that they had to replace piece-by-piece until I threatened to sue them and they gave me a "new" one...which promptly started falling apart as well. It is currently in my closet, in pieces. Literally, IN PIECES...the fucking screen fell off (no, I didn't drop it).

8. So this is not my imagination? I'm not imagining this? This is all real?
all these things I am noticing about this equipment that I feel should not be falling apart like it is for as long as I've owned it? Whew...you know...for a moment there I thought I was going fucking nuts, but I see you've had a less-than-pleasant experience with this company. Now I feel better.

Sorry about that laptop...did you take the matter any further or did you decide to go with another company?

10. It's definitely not just you

After "fixing" the first laptop as it fell apart...I mean, honestly, I had to force them to replace every meaningful piece of that computer...and then having the second one fall apart, I gave up.

The thing was, I was in law school at the time and the fucking thing seemed to know my finals schedule. It would collapse and/or explode every single time I was prepping for finals. So the half-day-long marathon phone calls to tech support in Mumbai were absolutely not appreciated. I also had to use every word of legal jargon I knew in order to convince them to fix the damn thing, even though it was fully covered by warranty.

I've had a Mac iBook for 4 years and have had very, very few problems with it. The few problems I have had were fixed, no questions asked and free of charge at the local Apple store. (I went through both of those Dell laptops in about 4 years)

That said, I've dealt with Dell desktops at work and they were fine. There is something about the laptops though...just absolute pieces of SHIT.

9. We refuse to have them in the office.
We did a bulk buy of 250. Every last fucking one of them broke within the first week.

12. Did you lose much business because of that?
That is inexcusable! 250?! Just my experience shows me that these things were definitely not built to last...

11. Hear ye!! Hear ye!!
I completely agree. I used to own a Dell laptop. It was top of the line when I bought it. But it was constantly breaking down, got outdated in less than 6 months, and I cannot even count how many times I needed to reformat the hard drive. God that thing was a piece of shit.

Thank god where I work we build all our own machines in-house and dont have to deal with those assholes.

13. I've worked on many a PC and my coworkers and I agree....
...we hate Dell computers. They are clunky and the XP operating system for some reason never works right on them.

16. I wish I knew you years ago...I would have asked your advice on it
but your sympathies are noted ( and appreciated, my friend ). This was my first computer ever ( I bought this in 2003 ). It's served its purpose, I suppose. Now, I'm ready to throw it out this window

15. Agreed. Dell laptop worst piece of trash I ever owned and
it did the same thing -- damn thing just fell apart. And the service was worse than terrible. Of course the fact that the piece of shit started falling apart within the first year wasn't their fault and no way were they going to replace the still under warranty computer. Never, ever again! I wished plagues of fleas on them.

17. This is a desktop I own...do you have any experience with those?
I never had a laptop, but I can tell you that this thing is a piece of CRAP. It's a Dimension 2350 ( probably WAY outdated, I'm sure ). I have heard plenty about the shitty aspects of the laptops...trust me, this is the LAST Dell product I'm owning.

18. Never owned a Dell desktop.....
The laptop was the first and last piece of shit I bought from Dell. I do have a friend who I begged not to buy Dell. He's an incredibly bright guy whose had a hard life and is stuck in low-paying, mind-numbing work. He couldn't get the credit to buy a relatively inexpensive computer from anyone but Dell. That's definitely my impression of how they suck so many people in. Anyway, his computer has had LOTS of problems -- it basically sucks according to what he's told me. Can't remember exactly what the problems were, but the computer sucks.

21. Their business and server lines are nice, their home line is a total pot-shot.
it's half and half on their home line whether or not you get a junker.

22. Normally I would agree, but
My ancient P3 Latitude C600 is the exception that proves the rule. I bought it used for $75 from the s.o.'s ex-employer, and it's held up far better than it has any right to.

That said, I doubt I'd buy a new one from Dell, simply because the one I have is at the extreme end of the bell curve, and my next one would probably suck as much as this one has been great.
