But like a lot of illness which fall under the mental health spectrum, it's not easy to pinpoint one cause.
One theory is that the pedophile was abused as a child and wants to 'share' the humiliation and anger. Another is that the pedophile never 'grew' past the desire of seeing children as a potential mate. Another is that there is a sociopathic switch which gets tripped and never re-regulated.
There are a ton of theories. And, no two pedophiles are alike.
I believe it's because they have an immature super-ego, likely as a result of emotional emasculation when young. They can't relate sexually to adults because of castration anxiety, so they're driven to seek out sex partners (in reality or fantasy) whom they can control.
Yeah — I'm one of those who still think Freud was right. :)
