I've been wanting to get into making my own (electric, not acoustic. I know my woodworking skills aren't up to acoustic.), but haven't had the time or money to try it yet.

Martin used to partially build some guitars for sale; don't know about that anymore. There was another great place for parts for electrics; Stew-Mac. That was 15 years ago, before I was on the internets....

9. Yeah, Stew-Mac has a website now, and I've found a few others.
My main problem is that I don't trust my woodworking and general luthier skills to make the neck, but pre-made necks ain't cheap.

So I think as soon as I can find a job, my first paycheck'll go towards getting some parts. :)

They have basically all the parts - top, back, sides, bracing, neck, fretboard, etc. and you get to assemble it and finish as desired.

I can select from:

Rickenbacker Jetglo 350

Rickenbacker 360/12v64 (electric 12 string)

But I didn't like the way the pickup would feed back if you got close to the amp. So I bought a Fender. Wish I would have gone for the Hofner anyway, think I could have lived with the feedback.

Never occurred to me before, but now you've got me thinkin' about it.

It looks sorta like a BR-40 or BR-60, but it doesn't have the detail on the headstock or even a pick guard, and the headstock itself is tapered. Spruce top, rosewood sides and back, thin neck.

14. Primarily a Les Paul & Fender "Heavy Metal Strat"

The "HM" or "Heavy Metal Strat" was Fender's 1989 - 1992 journey into the world of guitars featuring 2 single coils, one humbucker w/ coil tap switch, and locking Floyd Rose.

I also have an Ovation acoustic/electric and a Seagull acoustic (http://www.seagullguitars.com/intro.htm).

It sounds much nicer than the other guitars in that price range I looked at, and visually it's just a lovely looking thing (you can't really tell from the picture- it's this beautiful pale spruce all over and has a really nice warm quality to the finish.) I really like it, though at times I wish it were a hair smaller- when I have to watch what I'm doing it changes the angle just enough that the body digs into my errr... chestal area... something fierce.

i put a Bigsby tremelo on the bottom neck and converted the top neck to 6-string bass, and had it pinstriped.
i play through a 1963 Fender Princeton which is connected to a Leslie model 16 speaker.
pedals are a Nick Nitro fuzz/octave,Vox (Thomas Organ Company) wah,and a Maestro Fuzz-Tone circa 1971.

29. Only an acoustic now
Something called a Fleetwood, made in the UK (well, by a UK company, mass produced in Korea). Very nice guitar, beautifully built, great tone. In the past I've mainly played Tele's, had a Strat briefly (didn't like the neck), and for a long time had an Epiphone Emperor Joe Pass model, which I unfortunately had to sell to get some quick cash :( That was a great guitar.

Guitars:

1. American made Fender Strat - it is made from ash and is heavy - late 80's build

2. Custom semi hollow body tele style made from tiger eye maple with a sunburst finish and black hardware - full size humbucker on the back and stacked humbucker on the front - push pull pots enable me to play one or both of the humbuckers as single coil pickups

3. Takamine accoustic electric - black with cutaway - probably about four years old

4. Alvarez accoustic red sunburst made in the early to mid 70's

5. Yamaha solid spruce top classical guitar

Amps:

1. A little Crate 20 amp solid state practice amp

2. Fender concert

3. Blues Pearl RV50210 Custom - mid 90's vintage - sounds alot like a Fender Blackface

4. Crate bass amp that I use to run the drum machine and the digital piano through

41. Sad thing is
I rarely play much these days.

About ten years ago I work up one morning to discover that while I slept I had experienced a sudden hearing loss. All my normal voice range hearing did eventually return - but I also developed a mild case of tinnitus and had some high frequency hearing loss. Things don't sound the same - without hearing those overtones the music loses alot of its richness and sounds a bit flat. I do miss playing though.

Some of the equipment I got when I was a kid. Most of the rest I got when I worked in a studio - nice equipment available at studio rates. The Takamine I got just a few years ago when I was trying to get back into my music and play more.

I keep thinking I should sell some of my equipment but truth is the only thing I would find easy to part with is the classical guitar. Sometimes I wonder what the heck I was thinking when I bought it.....

3. Harmony dreadnought.

4. Hohner classical.

Most of the time I play thru a Kustom 10 watt amp. Blows my bedroom away...lol.
When I need real power, I hook up to my bro's Matchless 2x12. Bothers the neighbors, that one does.
My next purchase will be either a Martin or a Marshall.

40. Fender American Ash Strat,
Rickenbacker 360/6 FG, Fender AVRI 62' Jaguar, '87 Mosrite 'The Ventures' Model, and a Hallmark Swept-Wing Vintage Reissue. Can you tell I love surf music? :P

The Ric is by far my favorite, FTR, and the Mosrite is a case queen because prices on them have skyrocketed since I got mine.

You'd think with all those guitars I'd be really good, but sadly, no. I don't play as much as I used to and really need to get back into it.

56. I really got lucky with the Ric
I was in a shop back in 2001 looking at the Carl Wilson Tribute 360, which was just beautiful but out of my reach financially so I ordered a regular ol' 360, instead. I think I only paid $125 more than a 330 would've cost, iirc. The hilarious thing is, the owner of the shop was a huge Ric fan and I think he was just as excited that I decided to get a Ric as I was!

I had to order it and it took four months for Rickenbacker to build it and get it to the shop, but if I had it to do over again I most definitely would. :)

that's how long Ric's backlog is now- and they just raised they're prices 20-40% depending on the model.

We're both fortunate to have gotten our Ric's before the ridiculous delays (I bought my 360/12 off the shelf, and waited 10 months for my 4001v63 bass in 2001).

I hate to think about how long I'd have to wait now and taking a look at prices on used '01 models on eBay and Gbase, they're often going for more than I paid for mine brand new. I thought about trying to pick up a 330 with toasters a couple of years ago and now I wish I had. :(

1987 St Blues Blues King. It's basically a very high quality "Strat" that was made by Strings and Things for a couple years in the '80s. I bought it new, loaded it with EMG SA pickups and have been playing it ever since. Other guitars have come and gone over the last 20 years, but I've never found another one that fits me like this one.

Hmm... what other gear can I get into ... I use Ernie Ball strings for the electric, Martin for the acoustic. Prefer medium-thickness Fender picks.

I guess that about covers it. :)

59. Thread killer me - NO one is going to comment on the 1968 Ramirez?
And you call yourselves guitarists?

60. '00 Martin 00-18V and '97 Bourgeois D-28 herringbone.
Both very sensitive. Great players. They both channel the voices of angels. Sometimes, I wish I had a vintage 0-18.

A friend of mine owns a high end guitar shop and I think it's partly due to my pestering him that Collings is now building 0 size guitars. :~~>

61. I don't play, but my pop does and has quite a collection
I can't remember much about most of them. There's one or two called "Johnny Smith", there's the Ramirez, which is mounted in a case on the wall, there's a few that I think are called Les Pauls...but that's all that I can recall.

66. Aria Pro II with a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup
It is a beat-to-shit relic from the SoCal metal scene circa 1988, but it has never failed me and still sounds great!

67. Well just about everything is Fender or Fender style
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 01:33 AM by freethought
The list goes like this at present.
1. Fender Telecaster American Series (Mexican made)

2. 72 Reissue Telecaster Deluxe-modified with PhatCat pickups(P90 pickups but in regular humbucker size, not the the "soapbars", GREAT TONE!)

3. Fender Stratocaster-mounted with Seymour Duncan SL-5s

4. Strat Style guitar-Warmoth body, neck from other outfit and Kinman single coil pickups

5. Stratocaster Style guitar-just finished putting this one together. Tobacco burst body, Seymour Duncan pickups, and neck from other outfit. I have put the title of "The Hot Rod" on this guitar. Most of the pickups are the mini-humbucker type. Not a true Fender but looks like one.

6. Telecaster style guitar-don't know who made the body or neck but it actually played very well. I am in the process of putting some new stuff on it. New GFS mini-humbucker rail-type pickups, new bridge, and a new neck. Trying my hand at reconditioning the instrument.

7. Yamaha FG730S 6-string acoustic guitar. Cost me $260 at a sale at Guitar Center. One of my pride and joys

8. Carvin Belair amplifier-All tube! A really good vintage sound! I think the speakers are just about had it though.

9. Randall Hybrid Amp-Uses a tube preamp in combination with electronics. Actually a decent amp.

10. A whole slew of pedals and effects.

I used to have:
A Carvin California Carved Top- pretty similar to PRS guitars. A fine instrument. Gave it to a longtime friend as a gift.
An Epiphone Les Paul Classic. I was actually quite surprised with the quality of this instrument. Surprisingly good! I gave the bridge a little tweek and replaced the stock pickups with a set of Rio Grande Humbuckers. Went from a "good" instrument to a "great" instrument.
Robin Stratocaster-Robin is an outfit in Texas, I think, that makes high quality guitars. Bought this years ago when I was in high school. Two really hot humbuckers, Kahler tremolo, and cool gold metal flake finish. Sold it years ago. I wish I new where it was now, it was a great instrument.

69. a few
Martin 0-15 (1955)

Breedlove custom (cedar, walnut)

Takamine Santa Fe New Yorker (1996?)

Takamine black dreadnought (don't remember the model, has a Fishman system instead of Tak electronics)

Fender Telecaster

Martin Backpacker

1973 Ovation 6 string

I've managed not to have to sell these for grocery money yet, but I'm getting real close. :-( I did sell a Strat and a Hamer a couple of years ago.

71. My list...
1. Early 70's Yamaha FG-185S Acoustic (beautiful cherry burst finish... she's essentially retired, though)
2. Ovation 1778T Elite (the black textured finish)
3. Fender Tex-Mex Stratocaster (sonic blue)
4. Dean Avalanche HS (deep red, cheapie guitar that I bought as a prop for a Mardi Gras Ball. I covered the pickguard and headstock with irridescent rhinestones, but kept it playable- it is something to behold)
5. Epiphone Les Paul Junior- 57 replica (recently replaced the P100 with a P90 and she screams now!)
6. Squier P-Bass (because you've got to have at least 1 bass, right?)

Amps:
1966 Fender Bassman and 2 by 12 small cabinet (near mint, with the stock Jensens in the cabinet)
Fender Pro Junior
Cheap Dean Amp that came with the Avalanche mentioned above

Nice children, temeah! Especially the Taylor- I was considering a Taylor when I got the Ovation, but couldn't justify the cost at the time...

bring myself to part with it.
