I just learned a new English word
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 05:07 AM by MissHoneychurch
oscillation

I learned it while cataloging the following article: "Transcendental or material oscillation. An alternative reading of Friedrich Schlegel"s "Alternating Principle" (Wechselerweis)"

I have no idea when I will ever use it

1. you can use it to describe a special function on a Japanese toilet.
but then that could encompass everything in the known universe, as well.

let's start easy, "people like to leave their personal room fans on oscillation during a hot day."

what can i say, the SATs were good to me...

2. Thank you
that makes a bit more sense to me than the title I just cataloged.

Of course, we have barely any fans here in Germany but still it is a better example than what I heard about Japanese toilets .....

3. "Oscillate Wildly"
Probably my favorite Smith's song evah! :)

In fact, I just put it on because this reminded me of it and I haven't listened to it in ages. I think you could listen to a clip of it in iTunes, but I don't know how (or even if it's possible) to link to it.

4. Never heard of it
but then I never heard the word before.

I will see if I can find it on YouTube when I get home. YouTube and work don't really go together.

5. The Smiths are getting a bit dated - they have a very 80's euro sound, but I still love'm
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 05:26 AM by LeftCoast
There are no lyrics to this particular song, but I was always struck by how the title of the song fit it so well.

Here's a link to it on youtube. There's a wierd little intro that has nothing to do with the song. Ignore that.

10. I studied German for years - eventually ended up there as an exchange student.
I started learning German in 1984 in HS. At the time you might recall a huge hit by Nena? 99 Luftballons? Always loved the sound, but couldn't understand the lyrics. I remember though, one day after I'd been in Germany for 9 months or so I heard the song again and I could understand it all! I was sooooo happy. Seems kinda lame, but it was a big deal to me. :)

12. I so totally understand you
when I came to the U.S. as a nanny I barely spoke any English but have listened to songs in English for years. Now like you, I didn't understand a word. Then after some months learning English I listened to a Beatles song and suddenly was like "AHHH!!! THAT is what they are singing about!!!" Eye (Ear) opening moment. I was a big deal for me too. So yes, I know what you mean.

The moment I was able to say "Hippopotamus" without getting a knot in my tongue was another of those moments.

14. Yep! Of course now my German has gotten very rusty :(
I need to go back for a visit. I've been thinking about going to CeBitt (sp?) in Hannover. I love electronics and my host family lives there. I'd love to visit with them again. Last saw them in 2000 and before that in 1991!

Where did you live in the US? I was in Goettingen, but my 'host family' who sort of adopted me from afar lived in Hannover.

so you better hurry :)

I did my nanny time near Charlotte, NC. A couple of years later I did an internship in Savannah, GA. I love the South :)

Now I live in Frankfurt.

20. And "ya'll" which tends to throw us northerner's a bit was probably 2nd nature to you
Since German actively uses 2nd person plural unlike most English dialects. :)

Anyway, I think I'm heading offline for awhile. It was wonderful chatting w/ you tonight!

They are the basis of all synthesizers.

21. OK, a swing is also an oscillator

I believe the Latin origin is describing swinging. Professionals use Latin and Greek to keep laypeople confused.

with bouncing springs and pendulums and the 2nd law of thermodynamics.

Entropy.

All things fall apart eventually.

I love Entropy.

Just closed systems.

Fundies like to use the second law as an argument against evolution but the Earth is hardly a closed system.

28. Imagine MHC walking to work
because there's a transit strike.

Anyone walking behind her would notice "that's a fine piece of oscillation!!!", or "she oscillates like a Swiss watch!!!"

It's easy to fit that word into a sentence.

used to view signal wave form patterns. Your TV set and CRT computer monitors are a close relative of these.
