How did you celebrate your 21st birthday?
Edited on Fri Mar-07-08 02:58 PM by SallyMander

I bought my first legal beer at Fenway Park. I knew they would card me (they card everyone) -- the people at the beer stand all got really excited and sang "Happy Birthday" to me. :D

Then i gave the beer to my boyfriend at the time, because it was Bud Light. :puke:

Went back to Rhode Island (where i was in school) and had a big party that night! I don't remember feeling TOO bad the next day, but maybe i've blocked the memory. ;)

What did YOU do???

This thread in honor of lelapin and ZombieNixon... both turning 21 today!!! :D :bounce: :toast:

1. Trying to get my ID.
Which, ultimately, still has not worked out, at least I'm 21!

Here in Austin the bars downtown will give you a free shot on your 21st. Then went home and blacked out. Don't remember a whole lot, but I've seen pictures. Good times....

and I still find something new to do every weekend. However, I'm a big city girl and Austin is a little small for my taste. But other than that, I love it here.

8. I bought beer at three different stores
At the first one, I didn't get carded. Nor at the second one.

At the third one, the guy didn't card me, so I said — whined, really — "Aren't you gonna ask me for my ID?"

"Nah," he said. "You act 21."

19. Y'know, I never thought of that
The only time I bought beer before I was 21 was at a liquor store where, word had gotten out, worked a clerk who'd sell to anybody. One day when I was 17, maybe 18, I bought a six-pack of 16-ounce Buds there.

A couple of weeks later, the storefront was boarded up. :)

I imagine, though, the guy at Store No. 3 had been selling alcohol for awhile and was astute about The Attitude — which I had only because I was of legal age. I doubt I could've pulled it off even the day before.

16. I went to the local watering hole for the college students
where my friend's band was playing.

Many, many people bought me shots - they say I had 28 in about 2 hours...

Rumor has it that I traded cigarettes for a seat at one point....

Apparently the band was playing Happy Birthday and was really pissed off at me because I decided I had had enough and walked out during the song.

I crawled to the kitchen in my apartment the following morning and drank the entire container of orange juice. I slept the whole next day.

33. I truly felt horrible the next day and I certainly did do
really excessive amounts of shots.... I do remember this one guy on the lacrosse team bought me shots that were 151 and tabasco. EWWWWW.... I ran away from him after that and I was so drunk he managed to get me with another one a little later  My roommate bought me 10 shots and we did them together - that I remember

There was a guy in the band who played the sax and I had the biggest crush on him. Her performed a solo for me that night and said that I licked his earlobe during a break - I called his "lobes" anyway because he had the softest earlobes I had ever felt.

I was very touchy/feely with my guy friends, but by no means was I the skanky ho. When I go to reunion - I was class of '91 - all the wives tell me they always hear good things about me from their husbands, and they always hear how my friend was slutty

Ah college - I was the queen of my tiny campus. Most of the sorority girls feared me because I was from "New York City" (I went to Ripon College in WI) and the guys loved me because I was fearless.

It was one of those little family run 'hole-in-the-wall' taverns. Aside from the dozen or so regular boozers, invariably parked at the bar, it was ALL college kids. If they started carding people ... they'd be out of business in a week. Things like that were a lot more 'lenient' in the 70's. :hippie:

55. That night?
Hmm... well, we started out at a bar with a good beer selection that my brother frequents (my roommate was there too, but he doesn't drink. So he was the designated driver that night.). We played pool and every time someone sunk a shot, the other guy had to drink. I suck at pool. My brother's damn good at it. :P

So I had three, maybe four beers total at that bar. Then we went to the more raucous bar, didn't drink much there. Then we went home and my brother started making mixed drinks. Tried to make the strongest chocolate martini he could. Barely phased me.

The reason I can't get drunk is because my stomach has a lower tolerance than the rest of my body. :P So by the time my stomach says, "No more!" I'm usually just barely tipsy.

No drinking was involved although I made up for that later when I went off to college that fall in Athens, GA in 1981! It only cost $2 to get into the 40 Watt Club and dance all night and beer was about a $1.50 for a Longneck Budweiser! Ah...those were the days! (We walked home to the dorms so no driving was involved!)

35. I woke up in the morning at Victoria Falls in what was then
Rhodesia and later that day flew to Joberg, South Africa. I managed to get into trouble at the airport too. This was in 1974, when apartheid was in full swing. My mom and I were on a safari tour of Africa and the group had about 40 people. We had to fly down from Vic Falls in 2 planes that left maybe half an hour apart. My mom and I were on the first plane and when we got to Joberg airport we had to wait for the 2nd group to get in so we could all get on the bus to go to the hotel. I really needed to use the ladies' room and so set off to find one, which I did, completely missing the sign that said "nie blancs - no whites" on the sign. I walked in and there were several black women at the sinks, which I thought absolutely nothing about, beyond smiling a hello. Afterwards, as I replayed the incident in my head, I realized that they had looked at me with trepidation. I completed my mission, washed my hands in a now empty room and walked out to rejoin my mom and the rest of the group. About a yard outside the door, there was a policeman waiting for me. He grabbed my arm and demanded to know what I had meant by using the kaffir restroom. I looked at him and replied, very intelligently "huh?, sorry what did you say?". I'm guessing that my accent gave me away because he removed his hand, looked at me disgustedly and said something to the effect of "oh, you're kaffir loving American, right?" Just don't use the nie-blanc room again." and walked off. I found out later that "kaffir" was not a nice word. There were a number of black South Africans watching (the restroom I had found had the companion nie-blanc men's room next to it) with no expressions on their faces. It was so surreal - I just shook my head and muttered something to the effect of 'apartheid sucks man'. One or two of the people in the area heard me and that's when I saw some real smiles. A few days later, as we were leaving South Africa for Nairobi, Kenya, we had to go through Customs and Immigration. The agent asked how we had enjoyed our stay. Mom said that the country was beautiful, which is true. The agent asked if we would be interested in immigrating. Mom looked at me and I answered 'hell, no - not with your stupid segregation shit.' It was one of the very few times my mother didn't lecture me for 5 minutes about the inappropriateness of the word "shit".

I would love to see South Africa -- sounds like you saw the good and the bad. Have you ever read the book "The Power of One"? It is one of my absolute favorites. It's about a little boy growing up in South Africa during apartheid (and it's the only reason i knew the word "kaffir"!). An absolutely beautiful book, though!

No, I haven't read The Power of One. It sounds fascinating - I'll check to see if the library has it. South Africa is very beautiful and it was a good trip. A week or so later we were in Kenya and I got to pet a baby rhino, who followed me around the compound (Me: Mom, look he's following me, can I take him home? Mom: No. Me: But remember the Bill Cosby monologe about the house protected by a rhino - we could have it! Mom: No, you have a dog already. Me: Darn it.), and got sneezed on by an eland. I can recommend the first as a fascinating experience and the second as one of the more disgusting things I've had happen to me while traveling.

36. 18 is the big one here.
You can begin with the drinking much earlier, I think it's 14 now (I know I could order any alcoholic beverage without any problem when I was even younger.)

So, when you can get your driving license at 18, you already, in most cases, know what it feels like being drunk. And not like you get drunk on your 21st birthday, then hop into your car and drive into the void. I think this way works better, somehow.

40. That makes SO much more sense!

My parents always let me try a sip of whatever they were drinking -- which in most cases i hated! (Scotch, Dad? Really???) I think it's a good practice though, because it took all the mystery and romance out of it. And they always told me that they'd pick me up any time, any place, no questions asked. I have great parents. :D

It's just the novelty isn't there anymore when you actually can drive, where this 21st in the US seems to be a big thing - with everyone coming to the big party with their cars, get awfully drunk and try to drive home.

I had to look up what day of the week it was to be sure. It was at a time when my school schedule had me busy from 7 AM to around 7 PM. After I was done with all that fun stuff, I went home, ate a quick dinner, then went back to campus to practice until the music building closed at 11. I probably stayed up until around 1-2 AM studying and doing homework.

59. Tequila shots, salt, lemon
small town in the Midwest, not much to do.

the fad at the time was to pour salt in the hollow on the back of the thumb, lick it, down a shot, bite into a lemon.

I was up to about the seventh or eighth shot before the first one hit. I don't remember half the night. I somehow drove my younger brother home without killing him. I couldn't even smell tequila for the next six or seven years without my stomach turning over.

Ah, the ravages of youth.

68. Oh, I did an upside down day type thing on my 21st.
I QUIT drinking. I drank about a fifth of Smirnoff a day UNTIL I turned 21, then I realized that I just couldn't afford to pay $10 a pop and take all day to get drunk.

That's when I nose dived into weed and felt the best I had ever felt in my life. And, oh, yeah, around my 21st birthday, the woman I was totally in love with, and still probably the only woman I have ever truly been in love with, took me out in the woods in her Chevette and we did donuts while we got wasted.

I think we actually slept all day long on my actual 21st birthday, and did the trip to the woods the next day or something like that. I don't honestly remember, but I do remember quitting the drinking alone and deciding to hang out and get wasted with her all that time. God, I miss her. I loved her. I still do. Those were the days. I suffer from CRS now, but I wouldn't trade the memories I do have for anything in the world. So surreal, those memories are, like a dream I can't believe I was lucky enough to dream. I miss those days. I miss her. I miss the weed too.

I miss you SO MUCH LaWanda and Mary Jane. I hate being clean (mostly, except pills) and I hate not being in contact with the woman I still consider my ultimate soul mate. I guess you can tell that though. I'm pathetic and sober now. I need a drink. :P :eyes:

80. Oh, I'm not sad.
I do miss her and my drug taking days, but those are excellent memories. Who knows? Maybe I'll reach a point financially where I can go back to the wonderfully fuzzy feelings I used to have. I don't know where she is though. I am not on speaking terms with her family any more because of the way they did her and she split town last I heard.

The memories were outstandingly good. I do miss my drugs though. :D

101. Was taken out by friends as the token American to a pub in Wales
They did a whip round and got me a pint...
In which was poured double shots of at least 5 hard liquors and topped off with Kahlua...

I was forced to drink it in one to the sounds of them singing the star spangled banner.

Mind you this was after four pints. I ended up having another pint or two afterwards.

Following this, I ended up dancing a jig with many people, lip syncing to Aretha Franklin's Think in front of ~30 close friends and acquaintances and being summarily thrown into a tub full of cold water where I was then dog piled on by 10 close friends.

All in all it was a night I will --believe it or not-- never forget. 20 years on, it was my best birthday ever. :)

102. Had the only alcohol induced blackout of my life.
I had decided I'd pace myself so I could have fun, but the bartender knew me and poured triple shots into my cocktails - everybody knew but me. All of a sudden things were woozy and fuzzy. I got into a giant half-remembered fight with my boyfriend and he left me at a bar with the rest of our friends because I apparently told him to get the hell out. To this day, I don't remember a single word of that fight but I remember being MAD at him lol. I remember getting into the back seat of some friends' car to go to another bar and the next thing I knew I woke up at the foot of the stairs in my house the next morning.

My roomies were less than enthused.

so, I know I didn't go out & get drunk - I was on a college campus of 20,000 or so - it's not like it was hard to obtain alcohol before I was 21 if I wanted...

I also know I didn't get laid, because I didn't get anything until I was 22...

I'm sure I got some decent gifts from my parents at least.

126. It was amazingly awesome (!) thanks to my then boyfriend / now husband.
He surprised me by taking me to Monticello. He knew I admired Thomas Jefferson and had never seen his home. After touring the grounds he took me to a winery in Virginia. Barboursville. Not exactly high season in November, but hey, I was 21. I could go to a tasting at a winery.

We returned to our college town where he was going to take me to dinner, but unfortunately Virginia Military Institute turned 150 the day I turned 21. The cadets and alumni had trashed the town and most of the restaurants were overflowing (and the one we really intended to go to had closed because of damage). So we ended up going to some godawful Kountry Kitchen Buffet that didn't serve alcohol.

But it was next door to the ABC store. My boyfriend/husband took me and told me to pick out any bottle of champagne I wanted. And then he made the clerk card me because she was going to ring me through without even asking.

We went back to his place, had the champagne and he made me a breakfast of homemade french toast the next morning.

You gotta marry a guy like that.

132. LOL! Alas no. He screwed the pooch on that one.
After we had been dating for 13 days he pulled me aside and said, "so are you going to marry me some day?"

And then left me hanging for over 3 years.

We had a bit of a rough patch the summer we graduated and then the following year I moved from GA to MA to be with him. 9 months later I started getting tetchy with him about it and he promised he would formally propose by my birthday.

Well.

My birthday rolls around 6 months later and I'm expecting something romantic. Nothing. He'd forgotten it was a federal holiday and the ring was in a safety deposit box in a bank (heirloom). So the next day I'm back from a horrible day of meetings in New Hampshire, sitting on the sofa in sweats and sulking big time. He comes in with the ring and some flowers and says, "okay, here's your ring."

To his credit he has made up for it for the last fifteen and a half years. I have to consider him redeemed by now after all the romantic surprises he has pulled off since then. He's also a great father, a fantastic cook and will change the kitty litter without being asked. He's a keeper!

I'm not sure what the wait time is, I just made sure to drink little enough it wasn't worth worrying about. I figured half of a weak beer, at whatever tiny fraction made it into my tits instead of my kidneys, probably wasn't much worth worrying about.

I sort of can't believe that I actually remember it at all... maybe it didn't happen, and I'm just assuming that's what happened because we went there all the time before and after I was 21? eh... who knows. after three margaritas and three shots in about twenty minutes, I passed out in the bar, was propped up in the back of a friend's car so as not to choke to death and slept for a while, driven home, passed to my laughing parents in the frontyard, slept like a rock, woke up the next day with a bursted blood vessel in one of my eyes - apparently a sign of alcohol poisoning, and one of the worst headaches ever.

I truly regret that night. how disgusting of me.

My friends and I worked at the same place(Wal*Mart), and on the day of my birthday, I worked from 7am till 4pm. I was scheduled the SAME damned hours for the day after my birthday as well, so I went up to a manager and told them this, and they said to come in at 11am instead.

One of my friends at work was 2 weeks younger than me, so we decided to "combine" our birthday parties on my birthday, since we would both be legal then. So all of us first went to the liquor store, bought a bunch of stuff, that I was able to get myself now(had older friends buy me alcohol before). We then went to my buddy's house and we all got plastered, there were about a dozen of us at the party, give or take.

Oh, and I didn't show up to work the next day until 1pm, I was really plastered that night! :D

But I ate a gigantic cheeseburger (from Nation's) just before passing out around 2:00 AM, and that killed off most of the next day's hangover.

I can clearly remember listening to "Stuck Inside of Mobile" while sitting on my friend's couch, so drunk I was damn near having an out-of-body experience.

Keep in mind this was only a couple of years ago.

Definitely on the agenda: A nice dinner somewhere, and a bottle of good rum.

206. i honestly do not remember
because at the time and place, drinking, voting, and by association adulthood, occurred on one's 18th birthday. (NYC early 70s)

on my 18th birthday i went to a b-ball game at some college in Brooklyn and ordered my first legal beer. then I voted the next year.

i firmly believe, though many may disagree, that 18 is the correct drinking age. making the kiddos wait till 21, when they can vote, marry, and serve in the Armed Forces at 18, is just plain stupid.

happy bday lelapin and ZombieNixon!

Call Me Wesley posted above about how silly it is that we let people drive before they can drink... Seems to me, if you take the mystery out of the alcohol, there would be a lot fewer DUI accidents!

Because the drinking age was 18 when I reached majority. On my 18th birthday, I went to the Nassau Coliseum with my friend Julie and we saw Eric Clapton's Slowhand tour. Then we went to Bill's Meadowbrook Bar and I had my first legal drink- a beer of course!:toast:

215. I took my first flight lesson
Then I went out for dinner with my family. By the way, 21 isn't the big one here. We're legal at 19. I think I worked for my 19th, which is quite sad.

I had dinner with my family. Had an alcoholic coffee drink that I ended up not liking. But a few days later I went to downtown Annapolis w/my best friend for crabs and alcohol! The peach dacquiri was yummy as were the steamed MD blue crabs... :)

EDIT: Oh yeah... I also spent the morning of my b-day at the MVA renewing my license. I remembered this because it's been almost 5 years since then, so this summer I get to renew it again. Wooo....

220. About the only thing I remember about that was that I was at
Penn State because that was where I was supposed to be.

Honestly don't remember a thing about that. But then again, that was more than a few years ago.

Happy Birthday.
